This morning the Holy See announced the decision of Pope Benedict XVI to accept the resignation of Archbishop Daniel Mark Buechlein, O.S.B. from the position of Archbishop of Indianapolis, Indiana, USA.

I met the archbishop 7 years ago after my Rite of Election. Good man.
In addition to Hodgkins, the archbishop suffered a stroke, so health reasons are almost certainly the main cause for his early retirement.
My thanks and prayers for him. Our archdiocese is left a bit nicer from his work.

Archbishop Buechlein is 73. Retirement age is 75, so anything prior to that age is considered resignation.
Auxiliary Bishop Coyne will be the ‘apostolic administrator’ until a new archbishop is named, and while I think very highly of Archbishop Buechlein - and he has more than earned his retirement - I would think it would be fantastic to have Bishop Coyne succeed him. Unfortunately, I don’t believe that’s likely to happen since Bishop Coyne was ordained to the post in March.

Archbishop Daniel will be greatly missed. He has been a good and faithful shepherd. We are very lucky to have Bishop Christopher as Aux and now, Apostolic Administrator. There is no question he will do an exemplar job. All the best to both of these very fine people.

Unfortunately his health has declined considerably in the last year and it seems that a decision was made not to wait until a replacement could be named (typically 6 to 18 month process).
Bishop Coyne was named Apostolic Administrator until a replacement is found.
With the recent death of Archbishop Sambi, who was the Apostolic Nuncio to the USA, it is likely that any nominations for the USA that were not already far along in the process will be considerably delayed.
I would anticipate a number of nominations will be announced before the end of this year. But I do not think we will see many the first half of next year.
