US Bishop Change: Joliet in Illinois, Steubenville

This morning the Holy See announced the decision of Pope Benedict XVI to name Bishop Robert Daniel Conlon as Bishop of Joliet in Illinois, USA.

The diocese had been vacant since then-Bishop James Peter Sartain was named Archbishop of Seattle, Washington in September 2010.

Bishop Conlon had been serving as Bishop of Steubenville, Ohio.
 
He will be missed. His letter on abstinence is the best teaching on the subject I have ever read.

👍 Though I no longer live in the Joliet Diocese, you are so right that the diocese needs him. That diocese was in such a mess for so long, the clean-up process will be painful, and long, but in the end, it will make the diocese stronger.

In fairness, I don’t know enough about Bishop Sartain to say he did a bad job. I know there were a lot of bad pastoral calls on abusive priests under Bishop Imesch, but I also had some very good experiences in the diocese under his watch (That means you Fr. Nowak!).

How long was the new guy in Steubenville? Local prayers of the faithful alone out there outta make him an excellent bishop!

Mostly I’m worried about who will replace Bishop Doran in Rockford soon. I fear it might be a certain Monsignor I’m too fond of to lose! So much so, I ain’t mentioning him anymore… 😉
 
The process has been speeding up lately. The longest US vacancies are now less than a year - Rapid City and Pittsburgh (Ruthenian) - both vacant in June of last year.

I suspect a new ordinary will be in place before next Easter, but perhaps by Christmas this year.

(That being said, the process generally slows to a crawl during the summer months.)
 
I think Bishop Sartain did a great job. We have a TLM in Naperville (daily) with a visit down to Joliet each Sunday.

There was one issue of abuse, but I don’t blame him for it happening. He held the guy back from being ordained more than once, but had thought that the doubts were cleared up.

I agree, but he wasn’t there long enough to clean up the whole diocese from his predecessor

There a couple of them, I personally served Reverend Monsignor Arquimedes Vallejo as an altar boy when he first arrived. Great guy!
Bishop Doran is awsome, I serverd my first mass with him, I held his crosier! I’ve served 3 masses with him and he also gave me, my brother,and two other guys the award for best servers of the diocese in the late 90’s.
I now attend the EF in Joliet diocese, but I am still part of the Rockford one.

It will be interesting. Bishop Doran is already 75 and Cardinal George will be 75 next January. That means that the Chicago-area Church will likely be getting 3 new bishops in the span of 12 months (give or take) to lead the 3 dioceses in that area. The dawn of a new era. 🙂

I agree. I just pray that we get good Bishop once more, and that they are orthodox in their teaching! Just like B Doran is.
