US Bishop Changes: Dubuque, Iowa & Fargo, North Dakota

This morning the Holy See announced the decision of Pope Francis to accept the resignation of Archbishop Jerome George Hanus, O.S.B. and to name Archbishop-designate Michael Owen Jackels as Archbishop of Dubuque, Iowa, USA.

Archbishop-designate Jackels had been serving as Bishop of Wichita, Kansas.

In addition, Bishop-elect John T. Folda was named Bishop of Fargo, North Dakota, USA.

The diocese had been vacant since then-Bishop Samuel Joseph Aquila was named Archbishop of Denver, Colorado in May 2012.
 
Thanks for posting! Look forward to getting to know him, but kinda sad that we don’t get another monk over here in DBQ-land 🙂
 
I think this is Pope Francis’ first round of U.S. appointments. Glad to see he is moving things along. 👍
 
Both are good, holy, humble priests. They will be wonderful shepherds for Dubuque and Fargo.

A bit of trivia…Bishop Jackels was one of the last, if the the last, U.S. bishop appointed by Pope John Paul II…and now he is among the first appointed by Pope Francis.
 
Yay! We finally get a new bishop! 😃 No more sharing with Bismarck!

+Jackels is still serving as Bishop of Wichita, and will do so until his canonical installation in Dubuque.

Bishop Kagan of the Bismarck diocese was appointed temporary bishop (I’m sure there’s a big fancy latin title for it, but darned if I’m going to look it up at this hour! 😃 ) of the Fargo Diocese after Bishop Aquila was promoted to archbishop of Denver. 🙂
 
Both of these bishops were priests of the Lincoln diocese.

I never thought about this until now, but it is possible that this will happen a lot more in the future, not because the Holy Father intends to supply the country with bishops from Lincoln but because there are shortages in many other places, the abundant will supply the much much less abundant. It is a numbers game more than anything else.

Here is hoping that these bishops from Lincoln take with them the skill to call priests and teach it to the rest of the country.
