The archdiocese had been vacant since Archbishop Raymond Leo Burke was named Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura in June 2008.
Archbishop-designate Carlson had been serving as Bishop of Saginaw, Michigan.
Bishop James Michael Moynihan retired and Bishop Robert Joseph Cunningham was named Bishop of Syracuse, New York, USA.
Bishop Cunningham had been serving as Bishop of Ogdensburg, New York.
