B]US Catholics feel they can ignore Church teachings

WASHINGTON (AP) – Three-quarters of American Roman Catholics in a new survey consider themselves in good standing with the church even if they don’t attend Mass every week or obey the church ban on artificial contraception.

The wide-ranging poll also asked Catholics their political affiliation, with 37 percent saying they’re Republican, 41 percent Democrat and 22 percent independent.

Asked about possible responses to the priest shortage, three-quarters said the church should ordain married men, while 61 percent supported ordaining celibate women. Eighty-one percent said clergy who left the priesthood to marry should be allowed to return.

The survey was partly funded by the National Catholic Reporter, an independent newsweekly.

This says it all, doesn’t it?

I was furnished a link to survey results by another poster. However, it appears that the OP is trying to make another point to which we do not have a link. Thread to remain closed for now.

There are a lot of goats in the Church in America, it seems. If they all left, there’d be no more priest shortage and we’d have fewer but better Catholics. 😛

Let’s pray and pray hard that these people will stop listening to the blandishments of dissident priests and nuns as well as our hedonistic society and embrace orthodoxy.

By this do you suggest that dissent is unique to the Church in America? If so, I beg to differ. Most of Europe could care less what the Church says or does and Catholicism in Africa is a religion unto its own that few westerners would recognise.

If the Church took dissent seriously, she would stop bragging about her billion plus membership.

I think that the cafeteria is closed everywhere in the world. B16 is for good cathecism. If we would teach good cathecism we would have Catholics who have a better understanding of their faith.

We have all the material we need. Now all we have to do is to implement them. There is a move to do just that. It is the springtime of the Church.

As I said before, most people that consider themselves catholic (small c) do so as others might say “white” or “asian.” Many don’t consider it their religion and true belief system, but as an identity.

IMHO we are all sinners and so we are imperfect. But, if we are to call ourselves Catholic we need to believe the teachings of the Holy Mother Church. We change for our Church we do not change the Church. The truth does not change, if it was truth yesterday it will be truth tomorrow, no matter how inconvient it might be to us as humans in 2005.

It’s amazing what 30 years of poor catechesis has created. There was a time that people would characterize themselves as “fallen Catholics.” Can you imagine such a thing…to know that you rejected Church teaching and that this put you outside the Church?

I agree a lot of prayer is needed for many people. They are not entirely at fault themselves for their poorly formed faith.

If you honestly believe this, you don’t travel much. Dissent is alive and well in the RCC.

It isn’t even winter yet, the Church is still in Autumn (or should I say fall).

If you look at my profile you will see that I prefer to call myself a former Catholic.

I tend to think she left me not vice versa.
