US: Choctaw tribe hardest-hit by Mississippi coronavirus crisis

About 10 percent of the tribe has tested positive for the virus, more than 75 died as the virus spreads in Mississippi.

When Sharon Taylor died of coronavirus, her family - standing apart, wearing masks - sang her favourite hymns at her graveside, next to a tiny headstone for her stillborn daughter, buried 26 years ago. Fresh flowers marked row after row of new graves.

Holy Rosary is one of the only cemeteries in this Choctaw family’s community, and it is running out of space - a sign of the virus’s enormous toll on the Choctaw people.

This is horrible news. Praying for the souls of the dead, may they rest in God’s loving arms, and for the safety of the rest of the people there.

Blessed Mother, please intercede for us.
Hold the sorrowful-
Mother and love the weary, abused, neglected,
broken or forgotten among us-
Give your aid to all needing help or healing-
Assist those who are sick, in pain or suffering-
Be with those needing peace-
Console the lonely or brokenhearted-
Comfort the lost, hopeless or fearful-
Guard the unborn-
Pray for those who are dying or who have died-
Touch those who do not yet see truth or have hardened hearts-
Help us be brave enough to let our hurt and anger go-
Show us the way to do the right thing-
Protect those who are in danger, and
Guide us from every evil.
May all who keep your sacred commemoration
experience the might of your assistance.
Amen

Interesting.

I should ask my Choctaw friend if she knows anything about this.

I remember reading that American Indians immune systems are geared more to parasitic diseases than to bacterial or viral diseases. With Europeans and Asians, it’s the other way around. That fact, it is believed, was responsible for the inordinate death rate of Amerinds when first exposed to Eurasian diseases centuries ago. Possibly it’s still the case.
