There is a discussion at MAD about apostle E.T. Benson, then US Secretary of Agriculture, on a “world tour” consulting with the LDS prophet about a suggested meeting with the Pope. In the OP there is a link to a blog describing the back and forth between Benson and McKay. The blog shows the US representative putting the interests of the LDS church before the interests of the country he is representing. And the comments on MAD show that it is perfectly acceptable to put the interests of the LDS church above those of the country you have willingly agreed to represent.
