US Shrines

Does anyone have a recommendation for a US (maybe Canada too) shrine for a long weekend? We plan on visiting Lourdes or Famita in the future, but for now are somewhat limited in where we can travel (baby on the way). Recommendations, along with stories or reasons to visit would be very helpful. Thank you!

PS. Right now I’m liking the Maria Stein center.
 
I suggest the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Hanceville, Alabama.

A beautiful church and campus, founded by Mother Angelica. It is located in a rural, country valley (middle of nowhere). There are several nice B and B nearby by.

I find a peacefulness there unlike anywhere else in North America and I have toured the continient.

Do a google search on “Shrine of the Blessed Sacrament” to find the URL. and read all the details which is too lengthy for me here.

I don’t know your situation but, Europe for a North American is very expensive with the current exchange rate (almost 3-1). Alabama is a lot less expensive then France at the moment. CDN-USA exchange is par.

While in Hanceville you can make the short drive to Birmingham and tour the EWTN studios.

At the Shrine you can spend time with the Lord at the Blessed Sacrament, attend the daily Masse and Stations of the Cross and browse the gift shop bookstore.

It is very quiet and remote there, a good place to spend quality time with the Lord and with your spouse in the romantic B and Bs.
 
In response to the poster above, if you do go to Birmingham, you have the opportunity to visit TWO different Eastern Catholic parishes: St. Elias Maronite Catholic Church and St. George Greek Melkite Catholic Church. Both are downtown and are very close to each other. It’d be a great opportunity to view the Divine Liturgies of some of the other Catholic traditions. (BTW, PaniRose, who posts on this site, is married to the deacon at St. George’s!)
 
How about Notre-Dame du Cap? Cap-de-Madeleine, a bit past Montreal. Right on the St. Lawrence River, but most beautiful part is first, the small shrine to our Lady, and then the basilica also on site. You might be able to stay at the convent there (I think Oblates of Mary Immaculate).
 
The National Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes is right here in my back-yard. Quite literally, actually. The Shrine is just up the mountain from Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Maryland. A pilgrimage out here allows you to see quite a few Catholic sites.

The college herself is celebrating her bicentennial year, being established in 1808 by Fr. Dubios. And, as you may know, it is also the 150th Anniversary for the Lourdes apparation, so there have been quite a few celebrations on both accounts (including a visit from the Bishop of Lourdes himself).

Also, not but five minutes North is the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Anne Seton, first native-born American saint.

Then, if you’re willing, an hour’s drive south will bring you to D.C. to visit the National Basillica.

But really, the Grotto here is beautiful, as is the college campus. I would highly recommend a visit out here. Although, I am slightly biased. 😉

I second that! :yup: Its their 350th Anniversary. Beautiful shrine with the forearm relic of good St. Anne.
Notre Dame du Cap in Quebec is good too and it is run by the Oblates. They do have a hotel of their own for pilgrims. While you are at it, go to Montreal and visit St. Joseph’s Oratory.

Let me mention the Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows, near Belleville IL. The grounds a fabulous, they have a Lourdes grooto (where I proposed to my wife), and you’re near all the St. Louis attractions.

I vote the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament. The Shrine is about 40 miles or so out of Birmingham. Up that way is also Casa Maria, where the Sister Servants are. They have very good weekend/day retreats there (just got back from one). If you can’t make the whole day and just want to come by for a couple conferences, the sisters are so kind and I am sure they would be fine with that. Then you can stop by Ave Maria Grotto as well. It is neat to see too. There is the Cathedral, which is beautiful. And you can make a stop by EWTN, attend Mass, see the studios, visit the gift shop, walk the grounds, and see a live show.

I haven’t been to Maria Stein yet. It looks very neat though. I hope to visit next Spring. It certainly would be a very special place to make a little pilgrimage too. 👍

Another place is the National Shrine of Kateri Tekakwitha. Bob and Penny Lord did a video there before. You can visit the grounds where she lived much of her life. You can visit the chapel which commemorates the chapel where she was baptized. Her body is buried in Quebec though at Ste-Catherine de la Laprearie, another place to make a pilgrimage too to seek the intercession of the little blessed Indian girl. katerishrine.com/index.htm

There is also the “Shrine” of the Venerable Solanus Casey in Detroit, Michigan. He has a wonderful story, and his body was found to be incorrupt, despite water filling the tomb. His tomb is at the shrine.

A friend of mine recently made a pilgrimage to the National Shrine of St. John Neumann. He had a very blessed experience there. the Saint’s body is there, displayed in a glass case. From what I understand it is a beautiful shrine to visit as well. stjohnneumann.org/

Beautiful, and peaceful. I’ve been there twice.
Allow at least a couple of hours to truely absorb the work of this one monk.
The Monestary has rooms available too though we didn’t stay at the monastary.
