Hi everyone. Is the Catholic Church ok with the usage of the birth control pill for the regulation of periods? What if you are married and having sexual relations with your husband?

The church is ok with it, but you should consider two things:
  1. Abstaining from sexual relations while on the pill
  2. The pill may only mask the undlying cause, but it does not cure it.

don’t forget it is a hormone and a large dose of any hormone will have side effects. IF you decide to take this route don’t set it up your self see a doctor, preferibably an obgyn or endocrineologist.

regular use of the pill has benn proven to be unhealthy. the higher the dose and the longer the exposure the worse it gets.

Years ago I read a story that addressed this. I can’t remember exactly which one, but it came out of a Catholic magazine. Anyway, this couple wanted to get married and she was on the pill for this reason. It was allowed, as long as the couple didn’t use it for it’s main function. Which kind of makes me wonder. The pill makes sure a woman doesn’t get pregnant, and yet she is suppose to be “open to life.”

If it’s taken for a medical intention, the birth control being a secondary unintended side effect, that’s a licit use. The key here, methinks, is the intention.

I’m not sure how abstaining during the use of a contraceptive pill (being used for a medical reason other than contraception) accomplishes anything. Can you elaborate, CG25?

This is somewhat dangerous ground for a guy to step into; however, is the purpose of regulating done out of convenience or medical necessity? If it is the former, then perhaps one should pause and rethink the gravity of the known consequence, that being infertility. Does the loss of fertility create grief or relief? If it is the latter, then perhaps one needs to pause and take another look at one’s will in this matter.

Even if you’re not planning to use the pill for the explicit purpose of contracepting there is still a problem with using the pill because of its abortifacient nature. Even if you were to abstain during your fertile time, you still wouldn’t have 100% assurance that conception was being prevented.

I wish I could remember the source, but I did hear a Catholic doctor say that he never uses birth control pills for treating problems because they only mask problems rather than really treat them. I would recommend looking up an organization called “One More Soul” that has a directory of NFP-only physicians, and they may be able to direct you to a doctor who would be able to offer alternative treatment without using birth control pills

I have a high school teenager and we battle with acne. Many of the high school girls are on the pill to help with their acne. I’m very much opposed to this. It’s appears to be an excuse to me. But, if you listen at all to the pill commercials, the side effects are scary. We also battle heart disease on her Dad’s side of the family. And, my teenager is included in that group. We’ve been working hard for years to keep her cholesterol down without the use of medication.

When the skin doc made the offer of the pill for her skin, I about bit his head off.

Holly you’re right i should have cited sources in my first post. i sometimes forget that not everyone has the same base of what they consider common knowledge. my closest friends from undergrad one is getting a phd in architecture, one is an ag teacher, one a laywer and i am almost(still a good bit though) a doctor. so i should have know better

My niece is on the pill for medical reasons. She was missing school for 3 or 4 days every month because she became so ill during her period. She was having problems with her weight because she literally could not keep food down those days. Obviously that couldn’t continue, so her MD put her on the pill. Since the primary purpose was to allow her to maintain functionality the entire month, she was told that it was not sinful.

I do not see how one can be on the pill for medical reasons but then still have intercourse during ‘infertile periods’. There are many problems.

The pill is an abortifacient.

How do you know when you have infertile periods? Infertile periods require testing and examination, like the natural family planning methods, to determine their existence.

If you do not know your infertile times absolutely, would it not be rash and reckless with someones life to have intercourse while on the pill?

Yep. My wife struggled with acne. When we were drawing closer to Church teaching regarding ABC, one of my wife’s protests was that the pill helped her acne problem. In confession, my priest jumped on that and said “well then the birth control is a secondary effect, so it is okay for her to use the pill.”

Now, here is where people often delude themselves. Are they *really *only using the pill to control acne or regulate their periods? Or, do they want to use the pill and are using these as an excuse? If it is the latter, and they have received “permission” from a priest, then they are still in a state of mortal sin IMHO. They lied to the priest about their intent. It is really, really important to prayerfully consider your motives, the effects of the pill and Church teaching.

BTW…knowing our actual motives, my wife and I did not take the priest’s guidance in this case. She stopped using the pill, and we started using NFP. She was able to get her acne under control through other means.

Oh ok. Thanks for this. I will be asking my doctor next week if I can’t get put on something else besides a birth control pill to regulate my periods. 👍

There are options other than birth control pills. My wife goes to a pro-life OB/GYN who prescribes her progesterone that she takes during the latter part of her cycle. It is used to regulate her cycles since there are some issues there. It also doesn’t have all the dangerous side effects, contraceptive, and abortifacient properties. I highly recommend asking your doctor about other options like this and not taking BCP.

As other people have said, BCP do mask the symptoms of underlying problems. If you’re interested, the Creighton method of NFP is very good for couples with abnormal cycles/infertility issues. There is also a network of pro-life doctors that are specially trained to read and understand the Creighton charting system. You can get referrals to them through the program.
