I’ve heard some Catholics condone the practice of the federal government separating asylee children from their parents and famlies. The latest statement from USCCB should put to rest any debate on whether this is a morally acceptable practice. http://www.usccb.org/news/2018/18-098.cfm
Additionally, I join Bishop Joe Vásquez, Chairman of USCCB’s Committee on Migration, in condemning the continued use of family separation at the U.S./Mexico border as an implementation of the Administration’s zero tolerance policy. Our government has the discretion in our laws to ensure that young children are not separated from their parents and exposed to irreparable harm and trauma. Families are the foundational element of our society and they must be able to stay together. While protecting our borders is important, we can and must do better as a government, and as a society, to find other ways to ensure that safety. Separating babies from their mothers is not the answer and is immoral."
I’m pleased to see them taking the stand and pray that other Catholics follow suit.

Yes, separating children from their mothers / fathers is horrific. Perhaps we should implement the same policy for non-immigrants… When we send bank robbers, murders, drug dealers and others engaged in illegal activities to prison, we should send their spouse and kids with them. Or I guess the other option is that we could just send them all home together, so they can become foundational elements of our society.

I agree with the Bishops here, but we don’t hear any calls for the home countries of these people, to treat people with justice instead of terrorism

I would agree that with asylum applicants, they should be housed together in a camp until the decision on their application is accepted.

Releasing them into the community while awaiting their hearing has failed as a strategy.

A number of these aliens haven’t been showing for their hearings.

BTW, these aren’t immigrants at all, just applicants for asylum.

I think people from the US have called for reforms in Central America. The media doesn’t report it, because there are a thousand other stories that are more relevant to the day’s news cycle.

Did you agree when the exact same policies and actions were taking place under Barack Obama?

Even the evangelicals are with the USCCB on this one. There has to be away to keep from separating immigrant children from their families as the norm. Of course, there might be exceptions when it comes to violent criminals, but in general, we should not be ripping families apart.

Yes. In all three cases, the parent broke the law fully aware that the penalty for getting caught would be separation from their children. These actions are all morally equivalent, because their results are the same.

They are participating in actions that they know will result in separation from their children.

Does a good parent rob a bank, murder someone, or do anything that will cause them to lose custody of their children?

So are you saying, that it is ok to commit misdemeanors?

I was agreeing with what Ricmat wrote! What part of illegal don’t you understand?Breaking the law is a crime. Catholic bishops have to follow the rules too!

Asylees aren’t breaking any laws.

Undocumented immigrants aren’t committing a felony.
You are mentioning two different groups here. People applying for asylum are doing just that, applying for asylum and just stewing until they have an opportunity to present their cases.

Illegal aliens aka “undocumented immigrants” actually are committing a crime by staying and working in the United States. Often they are using pilfered id (identity theft) or aren’t paying taxes on their income ( tax evasion).

Yes. Two different groups are involved here, so it’s necessary for me to point out the difference.

Undocumented immigrants, (note the correct term), are not committing a felony. For most misdemeanors, we do not remove children from their families. We are a pro-life, pro-family church.

I’m a little baffled by all of the cafeteria Catholicism in this forum. Are this many people really going up against the bishops?

Sorry. You are right. I thought you were responding to something different. I am 100% incorrect.

I support civil disobedience against an unjust law that prevents us from practicing our faith. To clarify, that includes the Trump Administration’s closed border, family-wrecking policies.

Are you taking a stand against the Church on this issue?

The secret government FEMA will provide camps for all of us…
