Here’s the link to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishop’s online New American BIble that includes annotations, cross-references and study tips via an alphabetical index. The “tips” section is a concise guide to the Catholic experience, including prayer to the Holy Spirit before reading the Bible; reading it in communion with the Church; and reading it to apply God’s principles in faith.

Occationally I’ll read something out of there just to see two translations, but typically I prefer the Douay Rheims

If one wants, they can download a bible reader (free) software called e-sword. It’s pretty decent, it’s of Protestant (I think evangelical) origins, but the author is kind enough to provide a Douay Rheims downloadable bible plugin, and from e-sword-users.com you can get the Haydock commentary (excellent).

The only caveot I’ve found so far is that the Douay uses Greek Psalm numbers, but the software reorders the psalms to the Hebrew numbering. The problem is that it doesn’t do the same thing for the commentary, so you’re not getting the commentary for the Psalm you’re reading. Kind of fustrating, I’m hoping there’s a fix for that.

I use the same USCCB online Bible link to study details (footnotes are very helpful). Some interpretations just need to be updated for deeper understanding of the Faith.

But hey, as long as the Holy Spirit is with you, as you are with the Church, then why bother?
