I would have been so much happier with a statement from the bishops that the best antipoverty program does not come from the government, or even from the Catholic Church. The best anti-poverty program is still the original, and it came from God himself. The best antipoverty program is the FAMILY.
Last month’s poverty statistics showed that families headed by a single woman have a poverty rate FIVE TIMES the poverty rate of a family headed by a married couple. It is even worse than that headline number, which only considers income. The poverty rate does not address the fact that married couples need to spend less for daycare for their children. The totally secular “Marriage Project”, a multi-year, multi-disciplinary study at Rutgers University found that the members of a family in a marriage also have better mental and physical health, longer lifespans, lower crime rates, lower rates of incarceration, better education outcomes, high incomes, and more assets. Ask yourself, which groups have a long history of support for marriage and the family as Jesus taught? My first answer would be the Catholic Church. Can someone suggest a second one?
Today’s unemployment report showed that college graduates have an unemployment rate of 4.2%. You double that rate for only a high school diploma, and more than double that rate again for those who failed to complete high school.
Where is even a mention from the two bishops that the biggest changes to decrease poverty need to be made by the poor? Government programs have a long record of sustaining poverty and the behaviors that cause it. They are nowhere near as successful in reducing poverty.
I have a new next-door neighbor. She is a single woman, and registered nurse, and just had to turn her life upside down to buy a house in a safe neighborhood and fight for the custody of three children, ages 3, 2, and 1, who were members of her extended family. The kids can’t stay at their old house–it burned down. They can’t stay with their parents–they are going to prison. As I understand it, the house burned when the mother and one of her boyfriends had their meth lab explode, and it was not a first offense for either of them. There is no question in my mind that these children are better off with their “auntie” permanently than they would be under a government fostercare program.
