At you church for Sunday Mass during Lent, has the priest used Eucharistic Prayer for Reconciliation I or Eucharistic Prayer for Reconciliation II?

When can you use them? Whenever you want?
Not quite. There are some restrictions on when they can be used.

At the moment I don’t have time to post the specific rules. They’re listed in the GIRM but they call for some explanation. I’ll get back to this thread later and post them if no one has done it by the time I come back.

I’ve never heard them in my current parish. I did hear one of them once on EWTN not too long ago. It was jarring but only in the sense that it was, basically, new to me.

They “may be used in Masses in which the mystery of reconciliation is conveyed to the faithful in a special way…” It then lists examples of Votive Masses. It continues “…as well as in Masses during Lent.”
That’s from the rubrics printed along with the EPs for Reconciliation in the Roman Missal.

It also says that although they have their own prefaces, they may be used with other prefaces (in contrast to EP IV). It specifically mentions using them with the Lenten prefaces.

So the rule for using them is rather ambiguous. It seems to leave open the possibility of using them at almost any time. Since they can be used with any preface, the restriction that they not-be-used on days with a proper preface does not apply.

Thank you for that clarification, Father 🙂

For the OP, we will be using EP Reconciliation I with its Preface this weekend.
