Used Book Stores

Book collecting is one of my hobbies. Most of mine are recent releases, but I have visited used book stores, but have only bought one book. This may change, I found a great used book store (it takes up all five stories of the building) in downtown Detroit that carries a very good selection of older Philosophy and Religion books.

Does anyone else here shop at used book stores?

Yup…have been doing it since I was a teenager.
 
I have gone to the same store … John L King… and have often over-spent. But I have “rescued” (that is what I tell my wife) some wonderful old hardcover books on saints, some old hardcovers on individual books of the NT… a collector’s book on the Imitation of Christ. Also some good copies of Knox stuff, like Mass in Slow Motion, Creed in Slow Motion, commentaries etc

If it is summer, I go real early before the top floor gets too hot.
 
I love 'em! I’ve also found thrift shops and garage sales to be great sources of books. For some reason, our local Episcopal church always has the best selection when they have their annual garage sale.
 
I rescued a 1958 bible- douy rhiems and westhamsire(sp) english, big pic of pope piux 12, indugences and pics all over it, it’s AWSOME! 14$

Yep. That is the store. For me, it is real convienient since I live near the Lodge in Southfield and the store is right off the Lodge. Fortunately, when I shop at used book stores, I am looking for a particular book. They did not have what I wanted today, but I found it at a used book store up on Woodward (no not King’s other store there).

this is the number one leisure time activity in my side of the family, it is what we do on Sunday afternoons when the other side of the family is watching football. I can find used bookstores in every town in the this country. Chicago is about my favorite. Don’t collect any more, but sometimes buy for relatives who do collect.
 
That is one of my most favorite things to do.

I have an awesome Catholic library at home, and they are all books from second hand stores. My prized possessions are the old mass books dated as far back at the 40’s and since my wife and I have started going to the Latin mass, we have no only been able to use them, but also give them to people who go and don’t have mass books. They are priceless. I have the lives of practically every saint writen about, and tons of Catholic Bibles, most of them old douay rheims. I can’t believe the wonderful books people get rid of and so many times there is inscriptions on the inside from a grandmother to her grandchild, or parent to child and some look like they have never been opened. One of my friends who can’t believe the bargins I get, says “you have a nose for sniffing out good Catholic books when you go into a second hand store”. My wife used to get bugged when I kept bringing
books homes from the second hand store
but now she enjoys reading them and sharing them with our friends.

Down here in Texas, we have “Half-Price Books”, which is a realy good used book store that I shop at. They also have a “collectables” section with old books and newspapers and such, and I have seen some pretty amazing old religion books. But I can’t afford anything like that.

I use to visit the Half-Price Books in the Dallas area when I lived doen there. Did not buy any books since they did not have the hard core Philosophy and Theology books that I was looking for. The used book stores around here seem to have more selection in that area.

I always get a chuckle out of books shelved in the wrong place. At one Half-Price Books I saw a multi-volume set of “Pope’s Essays” (meaning the poet Alexander Pope) shelved in the Catholic books. And Robert Graves’s “Claudius the God” was shelved in mythology.

I’m a big HPB customer.
 
This is the one thing I really miss about New York City – all those wonderful book stores – new and used. Does anyone else remember the Strand? Or the big Barnes and Noble remainder store that was catty-corner across the street from it?

There may be a few used bookstores around here, but I like to avoid the ones that specialize in paperback romance novels. :rolleyes:

Of course, there’s always the shelf-clearing public library “old book” sale, if I’m in the mood to rescue a worthy tome!

We don’t have a five story used bookstore but we have a wonderful used bookstore that has six branches. It’s called Bookman’s (actually the man’s name) we have three branches and they opened up three branches in Phoenix. They are heavy on romances but used bookstores have to sell what is traded. I did find a really nice book on Fatima there. St Vincent’s and the Catholic School thrift stores are also great sources of Catholic Books.

I could spend hours at used book stores!!! I don’t know of any real close to my home so when I go to one my husband is usually with me. I try not to spend too long. In about an hor he starts looking incredibally bored, but still says with a smile “I’m fine! stay as long as you like!” I try to grab some books and go. I love the classics.
 
Does anyone know of any in Kansas City MO? Blue Springs MO? Independence MO? I’d love to find some good ones.

I collect old books been doing that for a while now. I have a nice collection of Pearl S. Buck books, old Catholic books, like the Vision Series, Lives of the Saints, etc. I look for old books anywhere and everywhere. I once found a Catholic American history book for .10 (yes ten cents) at our local Goodwill. I keep my eyes open for garage sales, garbage take out days, but my all time favorite is the Friends of the Library Annual Book sale. I believe lots of states have them.
 
One of my used books came to me via a grandfather who was employed by a school district, and was able to rescue books that the district was discarding – it’s a “Dick and Jane” reader, but it’s the Catholic school version, and the kid’s names are John, Ellen, and Judy (I think). There are some differences from the public school books – the children have crucifixes in the bedroom, the family has a statue of the Blessed Mother, there are references to going to Mass, etc.
