Used Liturgy of the Hours?

Hi everyone,

I know I’ve made threads like this before, but I’m just really searching for a used set of the four volume Liturgy of the Hours.

Please let me know if you are willing to part with a set because I have been searching for a good used set for a while especially now to use at college during my daily prayer life.

Well, you obviously have internet access, so why not just visit www.divineoffice.org, and then you have no need to purchase or carry around a rather bulk set of books?
 
I, myself prefer using the bulky books because I love the feel of the paper.

I am posting on this thread to be able to find it someday. I sometimes do come upon nice Catholic books and if I can pick this up for you I will. I paid a mint and a half for my leather bound, gilted, silk ribbon etc… large type- set. It is worth every penny.

I would love to provide a college student with a set. It will be some months I think before I go to the place where I may find it used. But, if you are still in need then, I will pm you. Do you want it hardcover, leather, imitation leather or paperback?
 
There’s a used set on eBay right now that has a bid of $75, about half what all the rest are priced at. Might try placing a bid and see what you see.
 
If you want the 4 volume LOTH and don’t want to spend the $200 bucks or however much it’s going for these days, do what I did and buy one brieviary per season. It won’t make such a huge dent in your pocketbook that way. Now would be the perfect time to do this, since we are in the 18th week of ordinary time and just now beginning volume IV. You wouldn’t have to make another purchase until the 28th of November.

Practically speaking, you won’t have need for all four volumes for another six and-a-half months. Why not buy new, fresh copies, one at a time? I’m sure even college students can save up 80 bucks over December, January, and February. 😛

At least the LOTH, unlike something like the Roman Breviary for the Old Rite published by Baronius Press, won’t run you 415 dollars, and at least you can buy one volume at a time. Definitely take advantage of that.

That is what I did when I was beginning to pray the LOTH 11 or 12 years ago. I bought one volume per season till I had a full set. Now the volumes are a little worse for wear, but they have some life left in them yet. I am wondering, however, have the current translations for the collects been put into the LOTH? If they haven’t, when are they going to be put in?

In my copy of the LOTH, the prayer for the 18th week of Ordinary Time is:

Father of everlasting goodness,
our origin and guide,
be close to us
and hear the prayers of all who praise you.
Forgive our sins and restore us to life.
Keep us safe in your love.

Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.

The current translation for the collect for the 18th week of Ordinary Time is:

Draw near to your servants, O Lord,
and answer their prayers with unceasing kindness,
that, for those who glory in you as their Creator and guide,
you may restore what you have created
and keep safe what you have restored.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
 
Thank you all for your help! I actually just called my local used bookstore and they have the first two volumes (Lent and Advent) there that I will go pick up soon. Now I’m just looking for ordinary time! I guess I could just splurge and buy one volume at a time full price for now.

I really appreciate the divineoffice.org Liturgy of the Hours. If I felt so inclined I could print out the prayers however, I also really enjoy fallowing along and the quality of the reading and singing of these Hours by religious.

Collect is in the Introductory Rites of the order of the Mass, the first prayer the priest says just before the readings.

The LOTH closing prayer for Morning Prayer, corresponds to the Collect, but in some instances is out of sync, especially with the new translation of the English Mass.

There is a new translation of the Liturgy of the Hours coming which should correct this, but it’s probably ten years away.

Anyway, in the LOTH’s, most American Catholics have time for only Morning and Evening Prayer, and the single volume of Christian Prayer, The Liturgy of the Hours will suffice and it matches the four volume set for these two hours.

The four volume set has the complete “Office of the Readings,” which the single volume does not.

As part of the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites, my wife and myself used the single volume for years before we managed to get the four volume set.

So, if you are short on cash, just go with the single volume, it will serve you well until the new translation is released.

I use the Divine Office app for iOS by Surgeworks. You can download an audio file for each prayer. For me it’s better to listen, then it is to read. It’s pretty inexpensive.

I have a like-new three volume set of the Latin English 1961 Breviary that cost me $700 by the time I received it that is collecting dust right now.
