I work with a woman who yells out “God” in a loud startling tone of voice everytime her phone rings. It offends me and I told her that using “God’s” name like that is sinful. Am I correct?

well it may be objectively sinful but unless you know what is in her heart you are not in a position to tell her that she is sinning. What you can say is that it hurts you and offends you to hear God’s name taken in vein and hope she will show consideration for a friend and colleague if she has none for the Deity. One of my catechists has the habit of adding " . . . in heaven, bless us" whenever someone says OMG.

This, my friend, is using the Lord’s name in vain
. According to your description though, I think that she may have been doing it too(though maybe not as extreme). Anyways, if someone is not Christian, as I presume of the poster above me, then they will not care if they are sinning. If you know someone who is Christian and who is using the Lord’s name in vain(especially habitually), then please by all means, continue to correct them.- Status
