Dear all;

I have tried very hard not to use God’s name in vein since my last confession.

However, sometimes it just comes out. As soon as I say it, I realise and regret it.

I know this is against the commandment- so would this be a mortal sin?

Grave matter; full knowledge, full consent? I’m not sure the consent is there?

Thanks!

it is a mortal sin to take the Holy and Terrible name of God in vain. but if you accidentally slip up or do it out of habit but did not mean to, then it is not a mortal sin. you just have to be more careful in the future. always remember, if you are not 100% sure that something is a mortal sin, then it is not a mortal sin because you dont know if it is. however, you must seek out whether it is and should try to avoid that act in the future

Thank you for that answer. I guess we should insert the caveat that feigned ignorance doesn’t count!

Thank you. I suppose, simply, not knowing for sure diminishes the requirement for full and deliberate action on something we know t be wrong.

One can distinguish between blasphemy (and other grave offenses) and profanity /disrespectful use of the Holy name such in anger or pain etc in a way -say out of a bad habit -that is not blasphemy --not said -say out of contempt for God or directed at God etc. That such in itself while certainly NOT to be done (we are Christians --we love and reverence the Holy Name of Jesus etc-as Paul says --let no evil talk come from your mouths…) - such can be said to be ordinarily venial.

Let us praise and bless the Holy Name!

Praised be Jesus Christ of Nazareth --now and forever!

See my next post.

Also note that what is said there about 100% etc is simply not the case.

And normally a person who thinks something may be a mortal sin -ought to not do that something and seek to find out if it is sinful or not. (those with scrupulosity -can be in a different boat and ought to have a regular confessor to guide them.)

(of course if children are around and one is misusing the name of Jesus -that can make matters worse…)
