Magnificat, the magazine, includes a section containing the Order of the Mass with all of the Eucharistic prayers. Is there any problem with following along with the priest, or should we be putting down the magazine in order to meditate on the words?

There is no problem whatsoever. If it helps you get more out of the Mass then use it. It would be just like using a missalette.

Here is a nice essay by Wilton Gregory on this subject:

Officially, I don’t believe there is anything wrong with this.

Personally, because the Mass is both audible and visual, I feel that I am appreciating the Mass in a fuller way when I keep my eyes on the altar and the Eucharist, or gaze towards the crucifix or the candles.

A certain level of attention to the written word always seemed to be a Protestant tendency, IMO, because many denominations have rejected the visual aspect of worship.

It seems to me to be a stronger image of the theological reality occuring in Mass when everyone is “gazing towards the Lord” rather than everyone staring down at their booklets.

But I think each individual should use their own discretion. There is nothing wrong with following along in a missal or in Magnificat, especially if this is the way that keeps you most focused on the content- rather than gazing off and thinking about things not pertinent to God.

There’s nothing wrong with it, but I don’t do it. I follow along with the readings in the missal, but that’s it; I prefer to just hear the prayers and mentally echo them. I tried following everything in the missalette when I first started the conversion process in '04, but I soon found that to be too much of a pain, and decided to just listen. However…different strokes. Miss Bonnie subscribes to and uses Magnificat.
