My wife asked a protestant how, using the Bible alone, he came up with the canon of Scripture. He shot back with this and said that math and science can determine what is canon:

I know the article is long, but as far as using science and math to prove canon, any thoughts? I told my wife to ask the man where in the Bible it says to use math and science to prove canon. He keeps coming back that if she would have read the article she would know.

Hopefully some with more patience can read this and give me their thoughts because to me it was so far out there I didn’t even know where to begin.

Thanks and God bless

Of course it can:

Catholic canon: 73 books = complete (7) and divine (3)

Protestant canon: 66 books = man-made (6), and one six short of you know what!

Let them chew on that! 😃

haha lol

Listen…forget about how this person THINKS the correct cannon was described. Enlighten this person to the HISTORICAL truth that Canon was basically decided by a bunch of Catholic bishops who sat in a room for days deciding what was Scripture and what was false. Also remind this person that the whole doctrine of the TRINITY was discerned by Catholics. The trinity is something all Christians agree on. Those who don’t (Mormons and Jehovah witnesses, who are thus not Christian) often attack the Catholic Church primarily. Why us instead of the protestant Churches? Because that doctrine was defined by the Catholic church.

I would also suggest that this Protestant be asked who was it that preserved the books that are in their (edited) canon of the Bible. That should be an interesting answer.

Gobbledygook!
Someone has way too much time on their hands 😃

The link bangs on about the number 7
Catholic Cannon =73 // Protestant 66 🤷

The Catholic Church at the council of Rome 382 AD came up with the Canon, early fathers some Protestants point to invariably left out a book or included a deuterocanonical book.

The Church chose books that did not contradict oral tradition 👍

Jews have 25 books in their OT
Protestants have 39

Protestants carp on about the Jews for the canon but yet they arrange the canon differently. If our Jewish friends have it right, divinely inspired etc, why not go the full way. Seems like they just got rid of 7 books they didn’t like???

This kind of number nonsense can be used to prove anything. All you do is look for any relationships you can find and then build your theory around them.

Maybe your friend should rent the movie “The Number 23” and see how the game is played.

My wife demanded a book, chapter and verse in the Scriptures that this method was the inspired method that God commands us to use to determine scripture. He came back with this:
Here is your book and verse: (i coul;dn’t sleep til I answered your plea for book, chapter and verse)
:Acts 2:17 1 Thessalonians 5:21 : 1 Cor 14:29; 1 John 4:1 Ephesians 5:17 : ; Rm 12:2; Php 1:9-10;
In summary: Here is your licence/ permission from God/scriptures to receive and heed with obediance…
My wife told him that this is highly subjective and the same reasoning Mormons use to “prove” their BoM. She told him that she rejects Dr. Panin’s method as an unscriptural tradition of men.

He came back that he can only lead a camel to water, he can’t force it to drink

God bless

Also remind this person that the whole doctrine of the TRINITY was discerned by Catholics. The trinity is something all Christians agree on.
They believe the trinity was a creation of the Catholic Church. They do not believe in the trinity. Not just the term but the concept. They don’t believe that the Son eternally existed. He was created by the Father. They do not believe that the Father and the Son are co-equal. The father is greater to them in terms of authority and responsibility. The Holy Spirit is not God, only a force of God.

They reject the trinity on the premise that sense the specific words ‘co-equal’ are not used in the scriptures they must not be co-equal. So they look to scripture to square away this premise that they have created.

Sola Scriptura at its finest right?

But all of this is no big deal to them since the nature of God and the trinity is a “non-essential”

God bless

Go to this website, to the “Trinity” section, and let them try to sola scriptura their way out of the hundreds of Scripture verses there:

For a basic Trinity argument…

In the begining was the Word and the Word was God and the Word was made flesh (ch1 John)

Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father in me? The words that I speak to you, I speak not of myself. But the Father who abideth in me, he doth the works. John 14:10

For by him [Christ] we have access both in **one **Spirit to the Father. Ephesians 2:18

Going therefore, teach ye all nations: baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit [singular]. Matthew 28:19

So God and Jesus are one, with one Spirit. Sounds like the Trinity to me.
