Okay, I’ve brought this up here before, but I think most people misunderstood my main problem.
My friend and I have a musical group together in which we use computer programs to make and record music. I have the recording program on my computer legally- I laid down a lot of money to buy it, and I use that often to record. However, my friend often gives me beats that he makes on a pirated program, or I record at his house on a pirated program.
My question is: is this wrong of me? If so, to what degree?
I’m not sure about this, because I myself do not use the illegal software on my computer. I have bought legal copies which I use. I have also told my friend that I think its wrong of him to have that software and offered solutions for him to get the legal software more easily. He is obstinate though.
I have consulted three priests about this… One said I just need to explain to him that I think its wrong, which I did, then the rest is up to him. Another said its wrong because its saying “OK” to stealing. The third- a priest who I have always trusted very much through out my life- told me that I have sufficiently shown I am not into stealing by using legal software myself and telling him my objections and all of that, so I’m Ok.
I really can’t stop recording with him, using his beats (nor would I want to, we have a group together that I really enjoy)… what do you all think?

Gangsta,
It appears to me that you have fulfilled your moral obligation by telling him what you have, your 1st and 3rd priests are correct. You cannot be responsible for their sin. Lets look at it another way. If say, I am a typist and I type up notes for others in my office. Some of these folks use paper from another source (say another job) to write their notes on, I tell them they need to use either their own paper or company provided paper and not steal it from their other job. If they continue to steal I still have to type up their notes to remain employed right? So, since I have told them, I have cleared my conscience and fulfilled my moral obligation. When they continue to steal, I don’t sweat it because they know how I feel. What is the point of even saying anything then? Well, they might not understand what they are doing is wrong, or they might just feel guilty enough to change their behavior. Either way, you have helped them to stop sinning.

If your friend stole a car, (assuming there is no danger of the cops identifying it as stolen), would you borrow it to drive to work or go to the store or out on a date? I would not. Seems to me to be the same thing. At his house you are using stolen goods, like you would be if you borrowed his stolen car.

Thank you both for your (name removed by moderator)uts. It seems that I need to inform my conscience about this more… I know that my parents think I am without blame in this, but I will continue to discern- is it wrong for me to keep making music with my friends if I’m still discerning this?

Music is so very important to me.

To Quasimodo… If it is wrong of me to do this, where do I draw the line? Should I buy my friend that pirated program? If yes, do I have to buy him a legal copy of every music program he decides to pirate? I don’t think God would want me to do that. It seems a little crazy and foolish.

God will help me. I have faith. Thank you, my friends.
God bless.

By the way…

The ONLY reason I’m worried about this is because I just don’t want to offend Jesus and go to Hell… That seems to be my one motivation for doing good nowadays.

To my head, this seems like it really wouldn’t be that offensive or wrong.

I am a scrupulous person too, I ought to mention.

Thanks for your help.

Example: Are you saying that if you do not look at porn on your computer but look at porn on his computer it is OK? If I receive stolen property but am not aware of it; no sin. If I am aware that the property is stolen and decide to keep it because I did not steal it, it is still a sin, IMHO. If you must work with this person as a group, offer to share the price to purchase the software legally so you can participate is using his beats. If this is not possible, consider working without him or his music.
