My parents used their 1962 missals for daily prayers. I am not sure if it was the daily readings they would read or if it was the prayers in the back of the missal. I am just wondering does anyone else do that or do you just use the missal at mass? Like, say if you couldn’t make it to a daily mass or if the parish doesn’t have daily mass in the EF form, do you still pray the prayers, read the readings?

I might read the readings, but I don’t personally use it as a prayer book outside of mass. Though I don’t see why one couldn’t.

Depending on the version of the Daily Missal it may contain a variety of daily prayers including the Litanies. I use a missal by Baronius Press that contains many such prayers although I prefer to use a separate prayer book, compiled by Fr. Hardon.

Yes, I use my Angelus Press missal for morning offering prayers and augment it with recitation of the Little Office of the BVM throughout the day.

I don’t have the 1962 missal but the new revised Roman Missal and I like to pray the morning and evening prayers in it at home. If I don’t make it to daily mass but want to take a few minutes for the daily Bible readings I might do that. I am following a bible reading guide right now but I, also like to keep up on the daily readings from mass. It helps keep me focused on what is going on in the church calendar. I, also like the litanies and I like the prayers before and after confession that are included and other prayers.

Thanks. I got to looking at my OP and thought maybe someone might think I meant praying the mass at home because that is not what I meant. I was just wondering if anyone used it other times, like with prayers or keeping up with the daily mass readings as you have said or yeah, even helping to know whats happening on the church calendar. I was considering purchasing one but they are kind of expensive and I don’t make it to an EF mass very often, so just wanted others opinions.

Thanks again.

A missal will have other things in it than the order of Mass. Often there is an examination of conscience and prayers for many occasions. One of my favorites sections is the prayers for before and after Mass. These would be just as suitable to say before and after an OF Mass, if that is what you attend more often.

I used my missal daily for many years. It contained lots of great prayers. I would even bring it to daily OF mass because of the prayers and reflections.

Now I have the MTF/Scepter missal for OF so the EF missal is only used on Sunday’s. It’s just easier than carrying two books.

Yes, I use my Angelus Missal to pray the Mass and make a spiritual communion from time-to-time since we don’t have a daily TLM in my area.

Especially during Lent when each day has its own propers.
