Is sending a text that says “oh Lawd have mercy” as a joke a mortal sin? Is that considered taking the lords name in vain? Thanks.

Well, it’s kinda dumb…

Not sure it’s mortal.

It isn’t neutral or Holy though…

What does your confessor say?

When you are someone’s servant, everything you do or say is as if your Lord were doing it in person.
If you are the servant of the king and you deliver a deed for land to another person, it is the king who is handing the deed to the other person.
If the person says “Thank you”, and you say, “You are welcome”, it is the king who is saying, “You are welcome”.
If you eat a meal, it is the king who is taking care of you as his servant, by providing your every need because you are his own hands and tongue and feet in doing so many things.

When you say to someone, “Lawd, have mercy”, you are making fun of one LORD because you love another master (your audience’s approval of your wittiness).

But you are the LORD’s servant, - did your Lord intend for your audience (which is His audience) to laugh at Him and His imbecility? Is that what you were sent out to do at the end of Mass on Sunday?

A mortal sin is one that separates you from your friendship and connection with the Lord (in other words, you are no longer acting in relationship, or servanthood, or sonship to your Lord). You are now independent of him (meaning ‘separate’), doing what he would not do nor send you to do. And this separation or independence is death.

About a year ago I watched a Prager University YouTube video series on the Ten CommandmentS. He pointed out that it went beyond what you are talking about, loose and careless talk like “OMG”. My dad, who is Protestant, was raised to not even say ‘gosh’.

I have been very guilty of this from time to time in recent years.

The essence of this Commandment is not just reverence, according to this video, but to not use the Power of His name to do evil. To create war or commit evil acts and state it is because of God or in Gods name. This is frightening when we look at history and at current events.

How many people in power, especially in any church’s or other religious clerical position convince someone to do wrong, or to cover it up, or to think the Lord’s Laws don’t apply to them? Wars that are unjust? Stealing, or being poor stewards of church funds and then justifying it.

Why try and make fun of God?

You could form your conclusion with that question in mind.

Whether or not it is a mortal sin or not is not the point.

“Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain, for the Lord shall not hold him guiltless who taketh his name in vain”.

Mortal or venial, God has said he will not hold guiltless those who take His name in vain. So just don’t do it. Not for a joke. Not at all. Its not a difficult one.

Thank you for the responses. I understand it was wrong, I am just trying to decide if I can go to communion today or not.

  1. That is not something anyone on the internet can decide for you. It’s between your formed conscience and possibly a confessor. We cannot acertain the severity of sin here, we can point you to resources such as the catechism to help. But you probably already know to look there. Polls on the internet do not substitute for your own formed conscience. There are some who love to tell others something is not sinful, and others who love to point out sin. Niether are helpful.
  2. Based on your posting history you may have some scrupulocity issues. You should be advised to see a regular confessor/ spiritual advisor and/or a mental health profesional if you suffer from this issue.

Mortal sin is the result of three conditions present in sin.

All other sins that are not mortal can be confessed in an Act of Contrition.

However, the poster can only truly decide, as you said, or rather, allow God to help them decide, for the reasons you have given.

That said, the poster was in a hurry and needed to go to Church. Confession can sometimes be stalled if there is not time to go and then confess after.

So, I don’t think this is a good idea because I think the poster may struggle with scrupulocity. So against my better judgement. Here goes.
If one has a situation where they cannot know dicern mortal or venial. One does not need to recoeve at all!? Especially on a weekday.
Confession cannot be stalled, just because one needs to hurry and go to daily Mass.
nope. That is misunderstanding both confession and the teaching on the Eucharist.

Note this only applies if one dicerns they are in mortal sin. Which can be done in 3 seconds.

(This is not to say that I don’t agree that the OP should take this up with a priest and confess if need be. We don’t all the facts and it might be that he ought).

Sigh…

This situation is obviously different.

I’m going to stop my end of the conversation because it’s off topic and I think our points can be troublesome to the op who may be struggling.

I should have gone with my instincts here…

‘Can. 916 A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to…receive the body of the Lord without previous sacramental confession unless there is a grave reason and there is no opportunity to confess; in this case the person is to remember the obligation to make an act of perfect contrition which includes the resolution of confessing as soon as possible.’

I think the idea of suggesting people go to confession for every bad word said when not sure they have sinned is going to make for scrupulosity in itself.

The poster was not sure they had sinned. You yourself said that a person ought to know if they have gravely sinned within a short amount of time.

As said, I am NOT saying that they did not gravely sin. However, I also think this is solvable by an Act of Contrition…unless…they know that their sin met all of the criteria for mortal sin to be the case.

Hi returningcath,

Whenever I’ve been in question as to the seriousness of a sin and how serious it was–as to whether it was considered mortal or venial because I didn’t know–I would discuss it with the priest in confession if I just didn’t know and wanted to be clear on it.

OP, read upon what constitutes mortal sin, and possibly go and speak to a priest.

This:
