So, I understand the reasoning behind why interest on loans is allowed nowadays even though the Church had always condemned usury. It seems like it mostly comes down to the fact that the circumstances changed such that money could now grow through investing, and so it is permissible to charge interest to cover the opportunity cost of the loan.
Using that logic, though, couldn’t somebody just say that circumstances have changed so much nowadays that contraception should be allowed? Couldn’t somebody say, for instance, that, because child mortality rates are so much lower than they once were and it is unfeasible for many poorer couples to have large families, contraception should be allowed in certain instances? They could then make the argument that just, as excessive interest still isn’t allowed, so excessive contraception shouldn’t be allowed.
