Utah highest in porn downloading? Is mormonism all outside pomp with little substance?

i came across this paper on a mormon site, at first i thought it was just a fraud but after doing a whois the regisrtant is harvard business school. i suppose the data can be impugned but I was surprised to see utah ranks numero uno in porn downloading. the report can be found here:

it’s a pdf so virus free, anyway it breaks down porn downloading by state and utah ranks the highest. if you combine this with utah ranking very high in foreclosures many years, bankruptcies, anti-depressants etc… is it fair to assume that that squeaky clean image mormons portray is little more than outside pomp, what’s the expression a mile wide but an inch deep???

anyone elses take on this? not that i’m innocent or accusing, or judging anyone, but i also don’t set myself apart as a beacon of moral behavior either. so i feel broaching the subject is at least fair here…

It isn’t a very good study, and is not aimed at Mormons. It is aimed at conservatives, with claims that political conservatives buy more porn than anyone else. Utah is the reddest of the red states.

The Wall Street Journal did a article on this study:

"A look at the actual study–available here, though ABC omits the link–shows that it is far from conclusive. Edelman used data from only one adult-entertainment company. He concedes that “it is difficult to confirm rigorously that this seller is representative” and makes no evident effort to do so. And contrary to his New Scientist quote, the study tells us nothing about “the people who are most outraged.”

It is a poor bit of statistics, he surveyed one online porn company, and only 5 of 1000 internet subscribers. Nothing conclusive can come of such a “survey”.

Even if the study were valid, you would still have to ask people their religious beliefs to draw your conclusion.

/agree on the survey being aimed at conservatives rather then mormons. Linuxgeek is correct as well. One can find “wide but inch deep” people in any faith.
