The problem wasn’t really with the legitimacy of the council as much as the Church leaders appearing to want to displace the Council of Trent with Vatican II. But in time it was realized that the Church couldn’t displace the Council of Trent teachings any more than the Council of Nicea, for example. They’re all valid councils of the Church.

That said, traditionalists believe in the Magisterium of the centuries while progressives and many conservatives place most if not all their trust in the what the Pope says today. The question is whether this is a misplaced trust. Need some examples?

I happen to completely agree with your assessment of the Church today… We are not far off in our thinking ProVobis…

I tend to think that Catholics in the Church today are quite uninformed and not properly educated in the Faith. It shows on a lot of these threads. I cannot believe some of the things that are being taught in the RCIA classes…some of it is pure heresy with the instructor’s “spin” on Catholic teaching. There is definitely a split in the Church today and I would equate that to a lot of the private interpretations of the Second Vatican Council.

Paul VI lost all control of the Bishops and Council Members and just seemed to have given up and given in to the progressive thinkers of the Council. Difficult times that we are living in today… All we can do is get to Mass and continue to pray that God will lead us out of the chaos.

Sure Perhaps some about the appearance of wanting to replace Trent. Is this through inference or was this explicitly said?

I have not heard anyone explicitly say that the intention was to replace Trent. However, the language itself (no anathemas, etc.) is enough of inference to the intention of Vatican II (spirit of Vatican II) to replace Trent. After all, doesn’t a “welcoming” Church trump the language of the Real Presence, Hell, mortal sin, universality, no vernacular, strict rubrics, etc.?
