Hi everyone, I’m a student working on a research paper about the Second Vatican Council’s impact on Catholicism. I am particularly interested in groups that distinguish themselves from the Roman Catholic Church, like SSPX, Diocesans, and Novus Ordo. I’ve read a lot of the literature but I’d like to get a perspective from average (and I mean that kindly) well-informed Catholics.

How do Traditionalists see their relationship with the Roman Catholic Church? Which issues were primarily responsible for the perceived need to break away (or distinguish themselves) from the Roman Catholic Church? What are the most prominent arguments made against Vatican 2? Are the arguments more about Vatican 2 or the implementation of Vatican 2 (and what implementations have been the most problematic, from a Traditionalist perspective)?

Vatican II was far before my time and I grew up with its more modernist view of the church and the Pope Paul VI missal. I really can’t give much of an opinion on the council other than to say that after only attending the Latin mass a few times I almost felt a renewal of my faith. How such a beautiful thing could have been deprived of Catholics for no many years is beyond me. At any rate I’m glad Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI have given us the opportunity to attend the “old” mass even if most aren’t aware of its existence.

First of all, perhaps you just didn’t phrase it clearly, but your post makes it appear that you need to do more basic research before you begin.

“Novus Ordo” is not a “group that distinguishes itself from the Roman Catholic Church.” It is another term for the Ordinary Form of the Mass. If by “Diocesans,” you mean diocesan priests as differentiated from priests who belong to religious orders, again, this is not a “group that distinguishes itself from the Roman Catholic Church.”

Also, “Traditionalists” are not necessarily members of the SSPX, nor are they even universally sympathetic to it.

Thanks for saying this. I was wondering if there really was a “Novus Ordo” break-away group! Yikes!

OP, I grew up Baptist. Make Baptists look intelligent, not otherwise. Check your research.

If I were you, I would make an appointment with someone at the diocese that you live in. Our diocescan headquarters has a man on staff who is an expert on this kind of thing (other than the Bishop!), and I’m guessing that your diocese also has someone like this on staff. Get with that person and learn lots. Good luck on your research paper.

I am a Traditionalist and I see myself as a loyal and obedient member of the Roman Catholic Church. I think that Vatican II was often misinterpreted which led to many problems.
