In August my family and I are going to North Carolina to go on vacation. I am not looking forward to it. I’m 17 so I can’t get out of not going with my family. My mom is bringing her boyfriend and his son. Her and her boyfriend will be sleeping in the same bed. My closest friend is coming with me which is one of the very few thoughts that is keeping me sane. My only problem is I don’t want her to miss her church service because we are leaving on Saturday night. i can still go to mass on Saturday night but she is not Catholic. She is Methodist and I don’t think that they have any services on Saturday nights. I think that every christian church beleives that it is a sin not to go to church if you can. Am I morally obligated to this?

thank you

Sounds like a sticky situation. It can be tough when one member of a household values attending services more than another.

However, I think that your cheerful acceptance of your obligation will be more likely, together with prayers, to win over others, than being “naggy.”

Of course, there is nothing wrong with stating your beliefs with charity.

Not sure where in NC you are going, but when I go to the OBX, I go to a nice little Catholic Chapel near Kitty Hawk.

I really love the OBX. Hopefully, it will all work out.🙂

You are not morally obligated to see that your friend attends church services. You are only obligated to attend Mass, yourself.

Protestant religions do not mandate church attendance as the Catholic does. For one, they don’t have a Mass. They have a service, which is different.

Take your friend to Mass with you but just make sure she does not receive Holy Communion. I was a Methodist before converting to the Catholic Church. Attending Mass (without receiving) helped me learn a lot about the true faith.
By the way as a Methodist it was not a sin not to attend the Church service.

if they really refuse to take you to Mass and there is no way to get there walking or public transportation you are not obligated to go. just be sure that you have honestly and unemotionally told your mom of your desire to go. by all means invite your friend but leave the choice up to her.
