If you were vague when confessing a mortal sin, but didn’t intentionally leave anything out, do you have to reconfess it?

Also, I lied to my dad about being on a lustful site once to stay out of trouble, do I have to show him it now?

Hi there,

re: Your Question 1; Does the priest, from your confession, understand the claimed sin you are confessing?

re: Your Question 2; Part one of your question concerns survival. A lie is not a simple matter: we can be in error in seeing one when none exists. (These are deep matters: the question you ask is for yourself to answer, in my opinion).

I am not a Catholic. I am not a Christian. I do not hold a religious faith. I am a Philosopher.

If what you said was the truth, and the priest didn’t ask for any more details, you’re fine.

What for?

I assume the reason you lied was because you were wishing it were true that you had not done so.

I see nothing to be gained by going back to it, or showing it to your father. Simply resolve not to visit those kinds of web sites any more, and don’t speak about it to anyone.

You obviously suffer greatly from scrupulosity. Many of your other threads are asking if some small thing is a sin.

I hope you have found a confessor priest whom you can trust. Please go to him in regular confession. Save your questions for him and trust his judgement in all matters, no matter how small. Don’t start threads looking for our advice because the Internet is the worst place you can seek advice, especially where scrupulosity is concerned.

Be open with and ask your confessor …

I will be general here.

Yes if we forget a mortal sin or the number (and circumstances that change the nature of the sin…like you killed your brother) honestly…yes we need to confess it in the next confession…

But scruples are a different matter…

bottom line…ask your confessor…be open with him. He can guide you in your particulars.

I think it was to stay out of trouble.
Even so, I see nothing to be gained by going back to the web site, or by showing the pictures to one’s father. It would be better to simply resolve never to go on that web site again, and then get involved in some kind of healthy activity that will keep one from becoming that bored, again.

you would not have to show your father the site or tell him you lied, because it is not something that has hurt him or caused any damage that can be repaired,
the only one you need to seek forgiveness from in this case is God, and the one that needs repairing from the sin is you,

as for re-confessing a mortal sin you were vague with,
if what you left out changes the nature of the sin, such as whether or not it involved other people, or if others witnessed you sin, or how many times you committed it, or whether the sin you committed had to do with someone married or consecrated to God(priests or religious),
things like that change the nature of the sin, and can make it more or less severe, and so if you have omitted some important detail such as that, then you would need to confess again.

and when in doubt, just ask your priest, he will probably be able to give you better answers to your questions.

ok, hope this helps, take care.
