Valid confession? At least one venial sin must be confessed!

I read somewhere that it is good to confess at least one venial sin to safeguard the validity of the confession.

So, if you go to confession and confess all the mortal sins but forgot to confess at least one venial sin, would this be a valid confession?

I have been preparing children and adult for sacraments for 20 years and never heard this or read it anywhere. Are you sure you did not read that it is good, although not absolutely necessary for a valid confession, to confess venial sins to help us call them to mind and ask for grace to combat them?

I forgot to confess my venial sins today. I had the intention to confess some of them but I forgot. Was I repentant? Did I obtain pardon for all of them? Now I am sorry for all of them.

And venial sins are forgiven in the Mass.

It’s stuff like this that makes it difficult for people like me who already have scrupulosity issues.

I go to daily Mass. We do not have to confess venial sins. I’m going with that.

If you confessed a mortal sin, then there was no need to confess any venial sins.

Question’s 56 & 57 from the Baltimore Catechism only apply when one goes to confession without any mortal sins to confess.

(If you went to confession, and did not confess any mortal sins, and forgot to confess you venial sins, then what could you have confessed!)

Thank you. I feel better. I did confess my mortal sins. I need to find Question’s 56 & 57 from the Baltimore Cathechism.

No.

Yes.

What is meant is that one needs to only to confess one venial sin one is contrite etc for for a valid confession. (this is presuming one has only venial sins).

(of course if one has mortal sins one needs to confess all ones mortal sins in number and kind…)

If one had one mortal sin and 30 different venial sins …confessing just the needed mortal sin is all that needs be confessed for a valid confession.

You basically need either “all your mortal sins” or if one thankfully does not have such…just one venial sin …for a valid confession. One needs sin to confess.

For a confession to be valid, you need to confess at least one sin, whether mortal or venial. If you are not conscious of having sinned, but want to receive the graces from the sacrament, then you may confess one of your past sins. Most of us don’t have to think back too far to find a sin. Remember, we can sin by thought word, or deed.
 
I understand the humility but as I continue to read your posts it is painful. Do you think Jesus is there with a huge monstrous gavel ready to pound you into oblivion? You went to confession and did the best you could at that moment. You know that and God knows that, nuff said.

We can’t get so hung up on the letter and fail to live the spirit of the law. It is a fine line but one we have to embrace.

Though probably exceptionally rare (if not darned near impossible), it would be possible to have only a mortal sin and no venial sins to confess.

My bad, I was referring back to your quotes from the Catechism of Saint Pius X. I confused it with the Baltimore Catechism, which is similar, but organized slightly differently.
