Can two practicing Catholics exchange their wedding vows to each other with only two witnesses present and no Priest and it be a valid marriage in the eyes of God?

other than with a dispensation of form…

there is this exceptional circumstance in the Roman Rite:

Can. 1116 §1. If a person competent to assist according to the norm of law cannot be present or approached without grave inconvenience, those who intend to enter into a true marriage can contract it validly and licitly before witnesses only:

1/ in danger of death;

2/ outside the danger of death provided that it is prudently foreseen that the situation will continue for a month.

§2. In either case, if some other priest or deacon who can be present is available, he must be called and be present at the celebration of the marriage together with the witnesses, without prejudice to the validity of the marriage before witnesses only.

  1. Why would 2 “practicing Catholics” do something like this
  2. No, not without the blessing of The Church
As a practicing Catholic, you must already know the answer to this question before answering it…there is a reason for pre-Cana classes, etc…in addition, as both practicing Catholics, what would one’s motivation be to blatantly ignore Church teaching on the Sacrament of Marriage…not judging by any means, but are there some underlying reasons to do or ask this question that we are not aware of?

**I can imagine this in an emergency, including imminent danger of death.

#2 is already covered by the Canon quoted in post #2.**

I understand your POV…but in my opinion, the scenario wasn’t presented as such…and forgive me if I misunderstood…I just took the OP as asking “if it was ok if we decided to do it this way”

As a practicing Roman CatholicI DO already know the answer to this but this was a question presented to me by someone else. I told them my asnwer just as you all have answered me and they still argued the point… basically, I just wanted to confirm my answer to them and that’s exactly what you did. Thanks!

There’s also that if two Catholics were on a deserted island with no priest or witnesses and rescue not in sight exception. As long as they intend to rectify it when possible.

If I correctly understand what you are saying, I don’t see that in the law. Even in the extraordinary form of canon 1116, there must be two witnesses for validity.
