A positive intention to exclude children, on the part of either spouse, is grounds to invalidate a marriage.

This is somewhat independent of the mortal sin associated with the use of contraception. A woman (or man) who absolutely intends not to honor requests to “pay the marriage debt” during fertile periods marries invalidly.

The key factor in determining marriage invalidity is the strength of the intent to exclude children; specifically, whether that intent is stronger than the marriage vows.
