I am having a hard time accepting that only if you are married in the RCA (when at least one of you is catholic), is it a valid marriage. I get the RCA wants to make sure it’s valid becfore you get married, but just becuase you don’t check with the church before hand doesn’t make it not valid in itself. I am Lutheral and my husband is catholic. We married civily and now that we have problems he wants to use it as a way out saying we aren’t in a real marriage anyway. I said that I made every effort to become Catholic but couldn’t because he didn’t see any need to follow some rules he didn’t agree with the RCA on (having to be married in the church I mean). Now he wants to use it against me when he didn’t think it was a rule worth following before and is using it as a scapegoat. It makes me mad becuase we have two kids and I don’t think it should be that easy for him to walk out. I treat him as good as I can. His complaint about me is that I am not a rich stick thin model. He will complain about how I park or other stupid things that shouldn’t even be an issue when I do whatever he asks and he has time to do what he wants when he wants, he doesn’t work as much as me (hardly at all) and I do the house stuff and everything else. If anybody has the right to complain, it’s me. But becuase of that technicality he uses it against me that we aren’t “valid”. I have a lot of complaints aginst him as well but I still try to keep everything together and not make waves with him.
I guess i am getting a little off track…my main point is, I think it’s an out to a marriage (saying it’s not a valid marriage) and that’s not fair to the spouse that may want to make it work. But at the same time, I guess becuase I feel poorly treated, I guess I have lost my faith in marriage because I just don’t see people committing to it anymore no matter what and I think it’s an easy way out - this annullment stuff. I don’t know what should happen but marriage is way off the mark nowadays.
