Bookcat:

Rereading the posts, I think you and I are misunderstanding each other. I thought that we were arguing that a confession could be rendered invalid if a penance was not given, which I believe is different from what you thought we were arguing.
ah…there ya go 👍

I was never saying such…🙂

This bothers me,everyone is quoting the Church,or some person in close connection with the church,a live or not,but what worries me is that so many forget that we have a Bible, and the Bible is in a way the “final” word,at least in my mind.

"The Christian faith is not a “religion of the book”: Christianity is the “religion of the word of God”…(see link below)… we are followers of the Word himself …the living incarnate Word of God…The Logos …Jesus Christ. The Bible is the* inspired Word of God * and is very central but it is not all that Jesus the Word gave to us nor did he simply leave us a book…the book came from within the Body and presupposes the Body.

The Sacred Scriptures are to be read within the Church and not everything is within the Scriptures…

And it is important to note too that the authoritative interpretation of them has been entrusted by Christ to the Teaching Office of his Church…and that there is together with Sacred Scripture there is Sacred Tradition.

85 "The task of giving an authentic interpretation of the Word of God, whether in its written form or in the form of Tradition, has been entrusted to the living teaching office of the Church alone. Its authority in this matter is exercised in the name of Jesus Christ."47 This means that the task of interpretation has been entrusted to the bishops in communion with the successor of Peter, the Bishop of Rome.

86 "Yet this Magisterium is not superior to the Word of God, but is its servant. It teaches only what has been handed on to it. At the divine command and with the help of the Holy Spirit, it listens to this devotedly, guards it with dedication and expounds it faithfully. All that it proposes for belief as being divinely revealed is drawn from this single deposit of faith."48

87 Mindful of Christ’s words to his apostles: “He who hears you, hears me”,49 The faithful receive with docility the teachings and directives that their pastors give them in different forms. (CCC 85-87)

The church serves a very good purpose in interpretating scripture.it gives meaning and understanding to scriptural passageswhich cant be read and understood using ones own common sense normative approach.the scriptures often have tobe put in context using other scriptural passagesto get its true and intended meaning.A verse in the NT often has no meaning without referring to passages from the OT.the bible is the final word I guess you could say but the common man cant get the ultimate meaning.THe true meaning has to be passed down through the church like it always has. From the beginning the church (protector and defender) of sacred scriptures have had people who spent their entire lifetimes(monks, various scholars)studing and debating scriptures coming to consensus on meanings in the scriptures.
