A week ago, I confessed to some sins in the confessional with a priest whose first language was not English. I am not sure he understood totally all the sins I confessed, particularly one embarrassing one that I explained rather vaguely. Is my confession valid? Am I just overthinking things?

My guess would be that if he gave you absolution then your confession was valid provided that you are truly sorry for your sins. If he did not question you further then you can safely assume that he had all the information he needed. 🙂

I wouldn’t say you’re over thinking it, but keep in mind that Christ is present in the confessional. He understands your sins even if the priest does not. I would say the confession was perfectly valid provided the priest did his part…even if he didn’t fully understand everything you said.

You did your best and your confession was valid. Our Faith is not a legal system it is a relationship. Unless you sat out to intentionally deceive the priest, you are good as gold refined in fire.🙂

I agree with all of the above posts however I do have one question. Since I once went to a Spanish speaking priest with the hope that our language barrier would lessen the embarassment, did you have an opportunity to go to a different priest? Either way you are absolved but I am just curious…God Bless…teachccd 🙂

A confession is always valid, if you are sincerely sorry. It does not matter whether the priest understood you or not. You could even write an honest note to God, tear it or burn it, and you’ll still be forgiven.

How do you know? Why do you believe so? Who taught you this?

Good questions for us to ask you, I think, since the subject is so important.

God knows all. Of course He will forgive for such things if you are truly sorry for. My confirmation teacher, among many other people of my faith, had taught me this.

Besides, you feel better when you put something down on paper.

Ironically Yours.

Thanks for the reply B&B.

But what would the purpose of the sacrament of confession be then?

VC
Well, you still need a confession “on paper”–or records-- if you want go through a first communion or be confirmed to the Church.

Not only that, but there are a precious several who enjoy the comforts of being able to talk to someone who will “keep a secret”… like a psychologist, but some find psychology “sinful”.

Ironically Yours.

This thread is jumping around in some odd places. Thank you all for your (name removed by moderator)ut, I have resolved to go to confession again to make sure.

You’re fine. As long as you got absolution you’re good to go. I once had a confession that was similar to this. The priest didn’t know what certain words meant since I guess either there was no word for that in his language or he didn’t know how I meant it to be taken. I explained it to him as best I could, and it seemed he got the jist of it enough that he was able to give me absolution. That confession was valid and so was yours. 🙂
