If you must still speak with him, you could try asking him just exactly what you think Jesus would have said to Cardinal Law, as an example. Use Scripture. Ask him to try to find a passage where Jesus out and out condemned a person TO HIS/HER face to hell for a mortal sin.
The woman caught in adultery? No.
Zacheus, the tax collector (collaborator)? No.
Simon the pharisee (the one who invited Jesus to dinner but did not wash Jesus’ feet?) No.
St. Paul who persecuted His church? No.
The people who cursed Him? No.
The people who crucified Him? No.
Judas who betrayed Him? No.
Gee. . .no. None of these people, guilty of things as evil as ‘coverups’ or abuse, were condemned by Jesus.
Rather, He prayed for them, wept for them, beseeched them to repent, and finally died for them.
It seems to me that your ‘friend’ wants to have all the ‘pharisee fun’ of deciding that certain people are so ‘guilty’ that God ‘must’ condemn them, and anyone who sees otherwise is just as evil and guilty. Really, he is elevating himself to the stature of God by condemning these people, by wishing their death, disgrace, and eternal damnation. He can most certainly condemn sinful actions, but he may never condemn people. Poor man!
Judgment is God’s alone.
But he has become so twisted and hardened of heart that he has confused ‘zeal for God and God’s law’ to mean ‘condemnation of those he thinks break the law’, forgetting that such condemnation is forbidden to Christians and in itself is sinful, could even be mortally sinful. Poor man! He is in grave danger and the best thing you could do for him is to pray for him AND to model true Christian behavior yourself–by loving HIM while ‘hating’ his own unlawful evil actions, continuing with your own ‘loving and good’ actions, constantly doing the work of God as much as you are able in every aspect of your life.
May God bless you and also bless your friend, healing his soul and bringing him back from his dangerous lapse into pride. Humility is the key. And Christ is the way.
