It bears repeated, too, that there are no variations of Christianity.
I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only begotten Son,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried
He descended into hell
On the third day He rose again
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty
From thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen
Anything that varies from that is not Christianity.

One reply blames it on the Fall, and that is true, but that needs more explanation. Another makes the creed the complete rule of faith, but many heretics say the creed.
Reflecting on my own life and the stories of others, I suspect that most people fall away from the Church because of some moral problem although each one may think he or she is rejecting the dogmas of the Church on intellectual grounds. Luther was a monk who struggled with “concupiscence” for many years. He thought he was damned until he “discovered” salvation by faith alone and ended up founding his own church. Some leave the Catholic Church and join another church because it tolerates contraception or abortion or divorce and remarriage. Most in the US and Europe these days just drift into indifference.
