I should of made this a poll.
Yes. No. Depends.
Why? The truth isn’t subject to opinion. The correct answer is “it’s a grave sin. Whether it is mortal is a subjective determination.”

Let’s get the Supreme Court to rule on it, and let’s have jail time for people who did it. Let’s have the government break down your door asking questions if you don’t have enough kids by a certain time.

How did you get that from what I posted?

Cicumcision is a medical/health/religious decision that is to be made by parents with guidance from their medical professional/spiritual director.
It is in no way comparable to an adult Catholic male choosing to have a vasectomy.

Again what does this have to do with the contraceptive effects of a Catholic man choosing to have a vasectomy?

You are comparing apples to oranges.

All I can say is that I am much happier that my mother had done when I was born rather than me choosing to have it done as an adult.

I don’t remember it happening and after having my sons done when they were born I can honestly say after the initial pain, infants forget it ever happened and the pain doesn’t last nearly as long.

The health benefits as an infant are 0 to none. As an adult if there are issues requiring circumcision a man can choose to get it done and with anesthesia and proper painkillers.
The United States Army during WWII ordered the circumcision of many of its conscripts, and its actually a much more serious event for an adult.

I was chatting with my urologist during the last appointment and the men are still complaining about their adult circumcisions.

This has nothing to do with the topic at hand.

Circumcision is not a sin. A Catholic man having a vasectomy is grave matter and can be a mortal sin if all the criteria are met.

If you want to discuss the merits/dangers of circumcision, perhaps start your own thread.

No, not really. Each of my sons were wide awake and cooing about 10 minutes after it was done.

Obviously, I don’t remember if happening to me.

My sons and I were done for the medical benefits, not for cosmetic reasons and I cannot thank my mother enough for doing so. As an EMT I have seen the results of a non-circumcised penis. I have witnessed the raging infections in the elderly because it wasn’t taken care of properly either by themselves or the caregivers.

No thank you!

Please start a new thread.
This thread is about adult men choosing to have vasectomies.

It is in no way comparable to circumcision and genital mutilation.

Circumcision is definitely genital mutilation,
Do you consider having one’s tonsils or appendix removed to be mutilation?
think about how we feel about female circumcision.
Male circumcision in no way makes sex painful and undesirable. Female circumcision does. Huge difference.

A man at church today said it was a mortal sin.
He said his ex-wife kept suggesting he get one -
a quick operation - takes about ten minutes.
Is it a mortal sin ?
Catechism
2399 The regulation of births represents one of the aspects of responsible fatherhood and motherhood. Legitimate intentions on the part of the spouses do not justify recourse to morally unacceptable means (for example, direct sterilization or contraception).

Because routine infant circumcision is mutilation of a healthy penis. (Done without anesthesia or painkillers.) Yes a lot of American doctors do often recommend it but we are the pretty much the nation that does it for cosmetic purposes as infants and not religious. The health benefits as an infant are 0 to none. As an adult if there are issues requiring circumcision a man can choose to get it done and with anesthesia and proper painkillers.

Whoa. I got circumcised at age 22. I’ve committed a moral sin in the eyes of the Catholic Church?

Mortal sins require full knowledge and consent of the will.

If you were aware that the Church taught against it and still chose to do it, then yes, it was a mortal sin. Otherwise it is a severe sin, but still technically venial. I would definitely confess it though, just to cover all your bases.
