God does provide…however, humans reject and that causes suffering–suffering for those who reject God and for those who don’t reject God. That’s sin, it affects all.
Doesn’t this kind of render the whole “God will provide” concept moot then. If sin interferes and causes the kind of suffering to which acermak refers, regardless of whether those that suffer rejects God or not, then I do not understand how we can encourage the “Don’t worry, God will provide,” mentality. What am I missing?

Those of us who do NOT reject God have to get off our collective duffs and start doing what God commanded us to do.

Perhaps you’re missing Faith and Trust in God? Through sin evil entered the world. Evil is seen as suffering, violence, illness, death, etc. God does not will evil into the world. However, He also doesn’t directly change our free will even if He knows it will lead to evil. One of the saints (I think) once said something to the effect of ‘suffering is redemptive… through suffering our sins are absolved…’ Jesus himself spoke parables about God providing for the beasts of the field, the sparrows of the air, etc with the moral of the story being that if God provides for these, surely He’ll provide for His children as well. He mentioned that even though a father may give his child an asp when the child asked for bread, God will not forget the least of His children. Though a mother forget her child, God shall not forsake us… etc.

Our human minds cannot understand God’s ways. We can try, but we’ll always fail b/c we are not God. Trust in the Lord w/ all your heart and resolve to let Him sweat the small stuff.
