The documents were written vaguely.
Those in the Church at the time, and in the periods following, ignored the rubrics and the documents themselves. Instead, they applied what they called “The Spirit of Vatican II” to the documents, which basically meant “Whatever my little liberal heart desires.”
Where Vatican II called for the usage of the organ, they removed the organ.
Where Vatican II called for the retaining of Latin and Gregorian Chant in the liturgy, they removed the Latin and Gregorian Chant.
There is a very, very sharp difference from what the documents ACTUALLY say, and what was put into effect after the Council.
Heck, they didn’t even call for a new Mass to be written up by committee. They just made it up as they went along. And then, as if a new Mass wasn’t good enough, they ignored the rubrics of that (altar girls, Communion in the hand, versus populum, complete removal of Latin from the liturgy, folk songs, guitars, etc, etc, etc).
