That broke my heart to read that a Catholic audience could clap to such an outrageous statement. Perhaps the Protestant TV host doesn’t know better, but what exactly did these Catholics learn during their catechetical lessons if they literally think the Holy Eucharist is just a “wafer?” This is not surprising given the state of affairs in Germany, but it’s still terribly sad.

The clergy would be much better off actually teaching the laity the Faith more effectively instead of simply trying to accommodate all their desires and ideas of what the Church should be. What’s going to keep the people in the Church is the realization of the truth of Catholicism. Otherwise, everyone’s just going to leave when they realize not everything can go their way. Pray very hard because it’s not just the German Catholics who think like this. 😦

Conversely, many Protestants prohibit their members from partaking in Catholic Communion. So even if that option were there, these particular Protestants won’t be able to regardless of any changes on the other side of the Tiber. It’s not because they’re rabidly anti-Catholic (some are) but because the Lord’s Supper is something that shouldn’t be treated in a flippant way and there is deep meaning and significance behind it for a person to partake in it.

I think this proposal is more aimed at German Lutherans who, as far as I know, would largely not have an issue with receiving Catholic communion.
