Vatican deploys rapid-reaction security force

Vatican, Jun. 9, 2008 (CWNews.com) - The Vatican security force has recently added a rapid-reaction force and an anti-sabotage unit, the leader of the groups reveals.

Domenicao Giani, the head of the Vatican gendarmerie, told L’Osservatore Romano that the new units were introduced to meet the special needs of contemporary security. He did not disclose the size of the special forces, but did tell the Vatican newspaper that they have special uniforms and have access to Interpol information.

The Vatican gendarmerie is one of two separate Vatican security forces, the other being the more widely known Swiss Guards. Members of the gendarmerie are recruited from among Italian citizens.

Interesting. I hope they are successful in maintaining their security. Does anyone know if they recruit only faithful Catholics for the job or if they’ll recruit just anyone?
