We could take the money and field another Crusade to stop ISIS. Everyone know the Southern American Protastents would actually have something positive to say if that happened. ;). I only kid, that would be quite a terrible idea in reality.
Several hundred million wouldn’t cut a full military operation. It’d take billions.

The Jesus we know commended a widow who gave a substantial portion of her income to the Temple. (the Church if their day)

And when the rich man donated a huge sum, did Christ criticize the Temple elders for accepting it, or did he criticize the rich man for not giving enough of his wealth?

The Jews were commanded ( by Christ) to give 10% of everything to the Church, if modern Catholics did the same, the Church would have a FAR greater income than it does now.

The point is not how much money the Church takes it, it is almost certainly far less than God would like, but how well it puts those riches to use.

And I think it does a fantastic job overall, far better than most secular charities that I know.
10%? Oh darn I knew my buck on the plate wasn’t enough.

if I had my druthers, everyone would freely give 10% of their income
Lol. You’d oblige people to freely give?
From the tithes of the wealthy, great works would flow, from the tithes of the poor (like the poor widow Christ mentioned) great Graces would flow. And with both, the world would be a much better place.
People who send their children to Catholic schools are actually handing over more than 10% of their income to the Church in a way, considering that tithes used to pay for the teaching services of the Levites and after Jesus, the Apostles as teachers of faith.

My initial reaction was…how long have they mishandled their finances like this?

As someone who works in finance, it’s a great joy finding an error than can be corrected. However, the great joy then wears off and then it’s time to get back to business and put processes in place so the error doesn’t occur again in the future.

Now what to do with the added finances previously unknown…

Maybe God has plans for these new fiances that were previously unknown. Perhaps God intentionally put blinders on the Church to be used at a later time (perhaps now) for a purpose that is in need in the world that perhaps would have be spent and unavailable to them had they known about it sooner.

A former pastor used to tell us it should be 10%. 7% for the parish and local charities and the balance for others including international charities of our choice. He did not answer the question, however, if that was to be gross or net. lol …
