In a move utterly devoid of shock value to Catholics who have been paying attention at all, the Vatican has announced plans to fund NeoStem, a small adult stem cell research company in New York. According to the Los Angeles Times,
Code:
[NeoStem CEO Dr. Robin] Smith . . . was quick to emphasize that the Vatican is not investing in her company, which is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange. Most of the collaboration will involve a nonprofit company established by NeoStem, the Stem for Life Foundation, she said. The Vatican’s role will include fundraising, launching educational campaigns, contributing to research and sponsoring the Rome conference, Smith said.
Lol

My favorite line of the article.
And yet the field has shown mixed results, if by “mixed results” you mean “dismal and unmitigated failure.” When asked to list “diseases cured by embryonic stem cell therapy,” Google Chrome said, “Aw, snap. The information you are looking for does not appear to exist.” It then asked, “Did you mean ‘adult stem cell cures?’” and offered 13,700,000 results.

This made me smile 😃

Catholicism isn’t anti-science. Catholicism is one of the most progressive of all the Chrisitian denominations I know of, it’s one of the reasons I became a Catholic. I am not a cradle Catholic and consider myself pretty educated, reasonable, and very scientificly minded (currently working on my Masters degree). The Vatican Observatory is one of the largest observatories in Italy, and there is also actually at least one Jesuit Priest there who is actively looking for other life (other life God created aside from Angels and us). http://vaticanobservatory.org/index.php Also, there is a Pontifical Academy of Sciences (vatican.va/roman_curia/pontifical_academies/acdscien/) and St Thomas Aquinas (one of my favorite Saints) came up with some of the best scientific proof of God that I know of, which closely aligns what my personal scientific beliefs.

Many of the greatest scientists in history were Catholic. The Church isn’t anti-science and never should be. The Church is pro-truth as well as pro-Truth.

edit: OH! I see. Being tongue-in-cheek…

I think if you read the article, you will find that is exactly the point. The Church isn’t anti-science and has never been so, but secular society continues to believe that is so. That is what makes the opinion article so funny.

LOL that’s so perfect

Great article, and I love your tongue-in-cheek post title there: it’s eye-catching and it’s a great dig at the types who try to call the Church anti-science. It’s a little hard for it to be that way, since our present Pope is a scientist himself!
