The Pope is doing something at the White House in the near future.
And the President of the United States is also doing something at the White House in the near future.
Seems to me that the President could have done a lot of things- but, broadly speaking, he could have decided to act more like a Catholic for a few days or he could have decided to act more like himself. He’s acting more like himself, and the guest list is an honest portrayal of the people he cares about and supports, many of whom have a minority status of some kind.
It wasn’t too long ago that Pope Francis was talking about how he has so many friends now, people that he’s met once or twice, but the vast majority of them are not real friends and they constantly use that association to their advantage. Fake people who pretend at something in order to use a very powerful man to their advantage- this is what the Pope mostly sees every day. What we have here is another powerful man who’s decided to be more honest, and as long as the President doesn’t attempt to manipulate the Pope (which is possible- it might happen, it might not), I think Pope Francis will find a way to say that the honesty is refreshing, in a way. Of course, when “the Vatican says” something, that doesn’t necessarily mean Pope Francis is saying it personally. I would not be terribly surprised if this article about what “the Vatican says” winds up being noticeably different from the behavior and statements that Pope Francis personally puts out there.
It is a challenge, in a way, but it’s not necessarily a forceful or malicious challenge. I, for one, am curious to see how all of this will go.
