I just finished Robert Harris’ Conclave, a thriller telling the story of a fictional conclave set in present day. Harris is certainly a skilled writer and this is certainly a page-turner, but alas, it is also wholly absurd–comically underdeveloped characters (stereotypes abound), ridiculous plot twists, etc.

In the end this book didn’t quite do it for me, and in fact only increased my appetite for Vatican fiction. So I’d like to ask you all for recommendations for serious, thoughtful novels set in/around the Vatican. Any ideas?

Have you read Hugh Robert Benson’s Lord of the World? It has an end times storyline from a priest’s involvement. Very good.

I have, and it’s a very good book. But I’d describe it more as dystopian fiction. I’m really looking more for a smart Vatican thriller (if such a thing exists).

i read this book too and was very disappointed in the ending. it was a page turner, but i bet Robert Harris is a bit of an anti-Catholic and this was his way of thumbing his nose at the church.

I bought the large print book of Angels and Devils - Dan Brown.
Very fun to read.

Has anyone read “ In God’s Name “
about the Pope, in 1978, died after 33 days.
I know EWTN recently had a movie about it…
but it seemed to try to steer away from conspiracy.

Excellent. Thanks everyone! A number of promising options here to look into.

Also the Pierced by a Sword series has always been a high recommendation although I have not read them.

I wasn’t even aware there was a whole genre of “Vatican Fiction” beyond a book here and there like Shoes of the Fisherman.
Interesting and amusing at the same time.

Badly written “end times” fiction. I struggled through them, although the plot is good and the characters had potential.

Formed.org has the audio version of Father Elijah which was done very well. It is subscription based, but I think many parishes are subscribing, so people might have access.

i don’t know

i’ve found that many “catholic based” fiction novels are pretty much anti-catholic…

I’m reading “Windswept House” by Malachi Martin. Pretty hair-raising stuff.
