These were Councils – Vatican I was held 1869 - 1870, and Vatican II 1962 - 1965.

A google search will give you more than you ever wanted to know. 😃

And in case she doesn’t know what a Council is, I quote Fr. John A Hardon’s Modern Catholic Dictionary:

Councils of the Church. Authorized gatherings of bishops for the purpose of discussing ecclesiastical problems with a view to passing decrees on matters under discussion. In Roman Catholic terminology, if all the bishops are called to participate and actually represent the Christian world, the assembly is called ecumenical, which means universal; if only part of the hierarchy is invited, the council is particular. . . .

List of ecumenical councils.

Oh ok! Thank you for your quick response! I gather we currently don’t have a council anymore?? A Vatican 3 or 4?? lol.

A council isn’t a standing body (like a ‘Senate’ or ‘Supreme Court’). Rather, it is called by the pope to address a particular issue. So no, there haven’t been any councils since the Second Vatican Council…

It’s not a constant thing, like a parish council. They are called when the Pope considers it necessary, and have been called for various reasons. I’m not aware of any serious talk at this time of calling a Vatican III.

Here’s a timeline:

Oh ok! Thank you so much! I know of the council of Nicaea being the most famous one.
