A few comments were made by Catholics on CNN last night that show the myths about Vatican II are still alive and well …

MYTH: Vatican II did away with Gregorian Chant and replaced it with folk music.

FACT: Vatican II actually said that Gregorian Chant was to be given pride of place/preference in the Mass.

MYTH: Vatican II did away with Latin in the Mass.

FACT: Vatican II actually said that Latin was to remain in the Mass and that the laity were to be taught their parts of the Mass in Latin.

MYTH: Vatican II decentralized authority in the Catholic Church and downplayed the authority of the pope.

FACT: Vatican II actually confirmed the decrees of Vatican I and reemphasized the central authority of the pope.

MYTH: Vatican II said that all religions were equal.

FACT: Vatican II actually said that there is no salvation outside the Catholic Church.

MYTH: Pope John Paul II derailed the reforms begun at Vatican II and sent the Catholic Church back to the Middle Ages.

FACT: Many of the reforms called for by Vatican II were not implemented until Pope John Paul II became pope, and many of the so called “reforms” begun at Vatican II were not called for by Vatican II and actually went against the express language of the council.

I saw a woman on the news who said that Benedict XVI was reverting on Vatican II because he claims there is no salvation outside the Church. It’s amazing how people have totally misinterpreted that Council. Vatican II simply reiterated what the Church has always taught, it just said it and explained it in a gentler, more pastoral way (ie no “let him be anathema” statements).

Yes, it is strange how many refuse to trust that V II was lead by the Holy Spirit through an authentic Pope.

Very sad, and arrogant.

Well nothing could be further from the truth, and here is an excerpt from the Pope’s speech today:

"“I too, as I start in the service that is proper to the Successor of Peter, wish to affirm with force my decided will to pursue the commitment to enact Vatican Council II, in the wake of my predecessors and in faithful continuity with the millennia-old tradition of the Church”***
