Any thoughts on how the heresiarch Luther advocated burning down Jewish synagogues, Father? Just to start. I mean…as part of this allegedly glorious “celebration.” What an embarrassment.

Why is Holy Mother Church celebrating Martin Luther - a man who once said;

Unless I am convicted by Scripture and plain reason-I do not accept the authority of popes and councils, for they have contradicted each other-my conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and will not recant anything, for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe. Here I stand, I cannot do otherwise. God help me. Amen.

and this…

I feel much freer now that I am certain the pope is the Antichrist.

and this…

Heretics are not to be disputed with, but to be condemned unheard, and whilst they perish by fire, the faithful ought to pursue the evil to its source, and bathe their heads in the blood of the Catholic bishops, and of the Pope, who is the devil in disguise.

How about this…?

Personally I declare that I owe the Pope no other obedience than that to Antichrist.

Martin Luther also said this…

May the Lord fill you with His blessings and with hatred of the Pope.

and this…

After the devil himself, there is no worse folk than the pope and his followers.

and this…

A simple man with Scripture has more authority than the Pope or a council.

So why honor a man who hated the Catholic Church and would have loved to see it destroyed? Why honor a man who propagated the HERESY of Sola Fide? A man whose teachings resulted in wars, murders, seizure of Catholic Church property that has STILL never been given back?

As with FrDavid96, I am troubled. Actually more than troubled. Even in my own lifetime, I see a continual dumbing down, watering down, and Protestantizing of the ONE TRUE FAITH. I pray to God daily that He will rescue us from all this.

It’s called outright hypocrisy. Some of the same people celebrating Martin Luther would be first in line to denounce Marcel Lefebvre as a schismatic. Luther, for them, deserves a holiday and a postage stamp.

Are you talking about here? I ask because I have seen any one celebrating him here.

Fortunately, such pitiable attitudes are very far from the thoughts and positions of the hierarchy.
Excerpt from Exsurge Domine, Papal Bull of Pope Leo X, issued June 15,1520, condemning the errors of Martin Luther:

Arise, O Lord, and judge your own cause. Remember your reproaches to those who are filled with foolishness all through the day. Listen to our prayers, for foxes have arisen seeking to destroy the vineyard whose winepress you alone have trod. When you were about to ascend to your Father, you committed the care, rule, and administration of the vineyard, an image of the triumphant church, to Peter, as the head and your vicar and his successors. The wild boar from the forest seeks to destroy it and every wild beast feeds upon it.

Rise, Peter, and fulfill this pastoral office divinely entrusted to you as mentioned above. Give heed to the cause of the holy Roman Church, mother of all churches and teacher of the faith, whom you by the order of God, have consecrated by your blood. Against the Roman Church, you warned, lying teachers are rising, introducing ruinous sects, and drawing upon themselves speedy doom. Their tongues are fire, a restless evil, full of deadly poison. They have bitter zeal, contention in their hearts, and boast and lie against the truth.

We beseech you also, Paul, to arise. It was you that enlightened and illuminated the Church by your doctrine and by a martyrdom like Peter’s. For now a new Porphyry rises who, as the old once wrongfully assailed the holy apostles, now assails the holy pontiffs, our predecessors.

Rebuking them, in violation of your teaching, instead of imploring them, he is not ashamed to assail them, to tear at them, and when he despairs of his cause, to stoop to insults. He is like the heretics “whose last defense,” as Jerome says, “is to start spewing out a serpent’s venom with their tongue when they see that their causes are about to be condemned, and spring to insults when they see they are vanquished.” For although you have said that there must be heresies to test the faithful, still they must be destroyed at their very birth by your intercession and help, so they do not grow or wax strong like your wolves. Finally, let the whole church of the saints and the rest of the universal church arise. Some, putting aside her true interpretation of Sacred Scripture, are blinded in mind by the father of lies. Wise in their own eyes, according to the ancient practice of heretics, they interpret these same Scriptures otherwise than the Holy Spirit demands, inspired only by their own sense of ambition, and for the sake of popular acclaim, as the Apostle declares. In fact, they twist and adulterate the Scriptures. As a result, according to Jerome, “It is no longer the Gospel of Christ, but a man’s, or what is worse, the devil’s.”

Let all this holy Church of God, I say, arise, and with the blessed apostles intercede with almighty God to purge the errors of His sheep, to banish all heresies from the lands of the faithful, and be pleased to maintain the peace and unity of His holy Church.

“It is the end of a truly magnificent and splendid day in Europe, as the year-long commemoration for this 500th anniversary has reached its culmination.”

This is one of the most embarrassing statements I’ve read regarding the anniversary of the heresiarch’s rebellion.

Not only is it embarrassing, it’s downright frightening! Our Lady defend us!

The errors he spread caused countless people to be deprived of the Sacraments and the intercession of saints — detrimental for salvation of souls, no?

What exactly is there to commemorate?

What positive value has Luther brought to the Catholic faith? Someone mentioned the counter-Reformation…but no one’s commemorating that. Just Luther.

What’s most insulting is the attitude of some that those who object to commemorating/celebrating the Protestant Revolt are somehow ignorant, or somehow “disobedient” to the pope. What nonsense. Nothing indicts Luther more effectively than his own drivel. And drivel it is. Just drivel that happens to have led countless souls astray from the Sacraments and the Church.

I fail to see how the desire for Christian unity necessitates celebration of the one that catalyzed the break in the first place. Commemoration implies Luther did something positive and worthwhile. So what did he do?

I’ve lurked on theses forums for 5 years and only today have felt compelled to create an account. I have noticed, ever since the “upgrade” to the forums a distinct uptick in the activity of rather, shall we say, radical posters, overwhelming and overshadowing actual discussions with their certitude on all matters. To see these folks work themselves into a froth over a stamp design which, as far as I can tell is not even official, and to use this to springboard into arguments against the leaders of our church, while undermining any overreaching goal of reconciliation, is truly disheartening.

First we heard the stamp might be fake news. Now we hear the stamp design might not be official. This really qualifies as head in the sand behavior.

A lot of posters in here are not comfortable with the fact that something awry is going on in Rome. They prefer to have their heads in the sand. That’s why this post is really rocking the boat.

I wonder what the State of Israel will think about this Luther stamp. Considering Luther is one of the most vicious anti-Semites in history.

Deplorable that so many Catholics would happily condemn Richard Williamson for anti-Semitism, but they more or less give a free pass to the man whose very name adorns so many church buildings…Luther the anti-Semitic heresiarch who called the pope the Antichrist (sort of funny the ultramontranists…who are really masters of twisting themselves into pretzels…are ok with honoring Luther).

Let us all imitate the saintly John Fisher and weep today from sheer grief as Rome celebrates the life and legacy of Martin Luther - the man who destroyed the unity of Christendom and whose false doctrines have led millions upon millions of souls down the road to perdition.
Well said, this whole ‘commemoration’ thing is one big massive joke, who is fooling who? The ones who adore Martin Luther think that the Pope is somehow coming around to their side, and those who adore Pope Francis think somehow they are coming around to our side. It’s all fake, where is the truth?

God Bless You

Stamps commemorate all sorts of things, including historical events and famous people.

Re beer, many monasteries have been brewing beer and growing ingredients for centuries. I don’t think we can say ML is the first to do that.

I am reminded of my fav Belgium beers. And how closely guarded are the brew rooms there.

That’s a topic for another thread 😃

That’s a vague answer 😉

We would not commemorate something that caused great harm to the Church with those who are happy about such a victory against the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. They think Martin Luther is a saint, and we are commemorating Martin Luther with them? It’s absolute folly.

There are many things we can unite with the Protestants on to bring about healing and understanding, this commemoration of Martin Luther does the opposite.

God Bless You

According to that logic we can have a Hitler stamp. He was famous. He would also support Luther’s views on the Jews.
