Vatican ll plain English

Has anyone read ‘Vatican II in Plain English’ by Bill Huebsch and Paul Thurmes? If so, what did you think of it? Additional information on either author is appreciated.

I think most viewers of this forum would place Huebsch a bit on the “progressive” side of things.

The book is required reading for the Lay Ministry Formation program in my diocese, in which I am currently partaking. Though I haven’t systematically dissected this paraphrase (yet), I have found in comparing it to the original documents that there are “things added” and “things left out”, all which seem to add up to a liberal and progressive spin on the Vatican II documents.

It is a good intro as far as it goes, but it does not go far enough. As with so many things put out by his publisher, 23rd publications, its faults lie more with what is not said and omitted than by what is said. It is far easier than reading and dissecting the documents themselves, which quite frankly is a couple of graduate courses on their own. If such a training course is accompanied by a solid course based on the CCC, with special references to the citations from V2 docs, the student will get a much fuller more accurate picture. There is a video, made 15 or yrs ago on V2 narrated by Martin Sheen, which is used as an intro to many courses on V2 and it is perfectly dreadful.
