Vatican Notes Danger of Wasting Time with Technology! Who, me waste time on technology and hacking?

I wonder if the Vatican put out the same warning after the printing press was invented and books were made available to more people.

Or the telephone?

Or radio?

Or film?

Or television?

Or the computer?

But everytime, someone in the Catholic Church figured out how to use these “technologies” to help advance the Kingdom of Christ. They’ll do it with Facebook and Twitter, too, and whatever comes after that. God who gave humans brains and the drive to “create” will also give humans the creativity to use our “creations” for His glory.

(My husband and I believe that communication “implants” will be next–implants actually inside our ears that allow us to take our music and communication with us everywhere.)

“Communication implants” Eh? Pretty interesting stuff!!!

I don’t know if anyone has seen this movie but I barely saw it this weekend, “Angel’s and demons?” I thought it was pretty interesting…And I barely knew about what they were talking about…Until I saw the “small matter” thing then I realized it was about technology and science…The church has never quite been happy about those two coming together…Interesting…thanks for sharing!

I’m following you! I promise, I’m not a stalker

I just joined twitter a week or so ago, i dunno, it’s hard to keep up with and i feel like I’m too boring to keep posting about what I’m doing or looking at online.

facebook i like, and there are a ton of Catholic apps on there to make your profile page very much about the faith, Catholic groups, NFP groups, and even a CAF group:thumbsup:.

I think people can waste time on pretty much anything but I think a warning is warranted…kinda like get your rear up from the TV warnings we get too. I sometimes wonder how much could be accomplished if people stopped tweeting and blogging about stuff and actually got up from the PC and did something. SO many people myself included work all day on computers now though, that this social networking is kinda bound to happen.

As useful as all of this technology can be I think the point of the statements made was to encourage us not to be distracted from God.

Various forms of entertainment can be great to help us relax and take a break from the stresses of life. But for myself I know that it can be very easy to replace God with the entertainment.

As for the poster who indicated that the church not being happy about science and religion coming together this is probably for another forum but I believe you are mistaken. The church is opposed to the ATHEISTIC views that SOME scientists may hold. The church opposes the view that science alone holds all the answers to the universe. But the church has actually promoted science and the discovery of how our universe works. Copernicus who originally came up with the theory about the earth orbiting the sun was actually catholic and he had no issues with the church. There are many Jesuit priests who helped further science and mathematics. Angels and Demons is purely a work of fiction (including the ‘historical’ facts most of these are fictional or have been twisted in some way).

I sometimes wonder how much could be accomplished if people stopped tweeting and blogging about stuff and actually got up from the PC and did something. SO many people myself included work all day on computers now though, that this social networking is kinda bound to happen.

I hear ya. Heck I run an internet cafe and part of my family’s income actually depends on people spending hours on a computer.

Then again, when I think about the stuff I can do without facing a PC, it’s only because it’s been replaced by another gadget (e.g. my PSP, my PS2) >.>;;

Even when I write, I only do it best when typing (my handwriting is terrible and it just kills my fingers ;w; ), alongside a heavy serving of online anime and manga. <.<;;

Thirdly, the holy father is not trying to say that the technologies are evil (including TV, phone, Twitter, Facebook and others)… He wants us to realize that technology has limitations and that we still need to keep our foundation in Christ. Which I agree with him entirely. There are indeed ways to do use this for good, and we are already finding some of those ways. He is just reminding us to use caution and encouraging us to travel in the right direction with it.

They actually offer Internet addiction support for the MS employees as part of their Employee Assistance Program benefits.

I am sorry I was speaking regarding with “idols” and people involving more into technological advances rather than the church-kind of forgetting about church communication using technology instead of just using it for own gains/gossip/etc…Even though technology is a great way of communicating with loved ones…I was not meaning about technology in whole…Besides thanks to technological advances we can see masses from other parts of the world… And I don’t believe technology is evil…Nor that it is wrong… Recent studies have shown that more and more scientists are actually turning towards GOD especially when they seem to not be able to explain things…So I am sorry if it came out the wrong way…thanks!
